Car Security - Basic Connections / Inputs

The leads and connections listed below will not apply to all alarms. Some alarm installations will require the addition of diodes , relays, resistors, and/or other parts. Always read your installation manual first.

Inputs
  • Power Connections
  • Triggers
  • Valet Switches Outputs

    Power Connections
    line Power (+) 12 VDC
Connect to the positive terminal of the battery using the appropriate size fuse(s). See your installation manual for more info.

    Ground (-) 12 VDC
Connect to any clean and solid chassis ground source. See your installation manual for more info.

    Ignition (+) Input
Connect to a source that has (+)12 VDC only when the ignition key is in the run and start positions. See your installation manual for more info.

    Triggers
    line Door Trigger (-) Input
Connect to the lead(s) that only shows (-) ground when any door is open. If you're installing an alarm in a vehicle that does not have a common door trigger lead, you will need to connect two or more together using blocking diodes. (diagram)

    Door Trigger (+) Input
Connect to the lead(s) that only shows (+) positive 12 VDC when any door is open. If you're installing an alarm in a vehicle that does not have a common door trigger lead, you will need to connect two or more together using blocking diodes. (diagram)

    Hood / Trunk (-) Input
Connect to a lead or switch that provides ground (-) when hood/trunk is opened. If positive (+) 12 VDC is present when hood/trunk is closed on the same lead, use a blocking diode with the cathode towards the switch.

    Sensor(s) (-) Input
Connect to the (-) negative output of a sensor or triggering device. Many alarms will have additional (-) negative inputs to accommodate additional sensors or ports to allow their proprietary sensors to plug directly into them. Some offer both. If the alarm only has one input and you need to connect two or more sensors, use a blocking diode on each output lead of each sensor.

    Valet Switches
    line Valet / Override Switches
Many of today's alarms have a port to plug the valet/ override switch(es) directly into them. If not connect one lead of the switch(es) to ground and the other to the specified input of the alarm. If your alarm requires a positive input, then connect the first lead to (+) 12 VDC. See your installation manual for more info.
