relocating antenna

The antenna for my keyless wound up being very low in the car. I am concerned about a possible reduced range in this location.
Based on what I read here the antenna is tuned to a certain length. I was thinking of connecting a length of shielded cable to the main board and then attach the antenna to the end to locate it in a more favorable spot.
I saw this mentioned in another post but there was no update if it worked or not. Anybody try this?
Thanks!

What unit is this? If done right an antenna location can be extended. The important part is that the shield is grounded on both ends to antenna ground. If done well and the connections don't have too much db loss then you'll benefit from the relocation.

It's a generic system that came from A1 Electric back in '08, #KE-68.
I wonder if a dipole antenna would work? I think it's a dipole I am thinking about. It's the kind that typically sticks to a window and has a small box with two short antennas protruding out either side. I could possibly hard wire it or get creative and use one of the unused board connectors so it could be disconnected when needed.
I wouldn't know how to check the frequencies of the main unit and antenna to match them, if that's necessary.

It'd probably be better to upgrade the unit to a more modern unit. You can't really just swap antenna types and expect good results. Antenna design and sizing is in fact based on frequency range. Extension cable has to match the impedance of the antenna system as a whole, usually 50Ω and the grounding is important. If you have the single wire antenna, upgrading the whole unit is your best bet aside from relocating the unit and antenna to a better location.
