Ok sorry for another question. I haven't decided on which system yet .
On the range does it have to be a straight line of site from the remote to the unit? I understand that walls and such would cut down on range probably but was wondering on the line of site issue. Thanks again.

Often times, the range listed on a specific R/S unit is under "ideal situations".  Warm weather with no interference and inline of sight.  As you mentioned, many variables come into play and all reduce the range.  Systems with FM frequencies give much better range than the budget priced AM frequency systems.  Of course the price goes up quickly with the longer range units.

Kreg how can you tell if a unit is am or fm frequency? Thanks again. I hate to keep bothering everyone but I want to make a good choice in what I get. Thanks.

That's a good question.  With some systems / manufacturers, they pretty much state it in the model number ( adding FM ).  With others, you have to dig a little deeper.  Compustar marks the Antenna with AM or FM.  If you can get the FCC ID number off the back of the remote transmitter, you can look the specs up.     http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid/    I don't think there is a list that just spells it out for you.  It's basically brand and installer experience.

A possible "general rule of thumb" is AM systems never exceed 3,000 feet of "advertised" range and FM systems usually start at 3,000 feet.

Kreg thanks for all your help. After the 3rd of the month I will make sure to make a donation to the site!
I found a Viper 3203 on sale for $80.00 so I grabbed it. It says it has a 2000 ft range for what its worth. It came with an alarm so I will be tackling that part as well. I assume I will need to order the door lock harness. Will I need 1 or 2 of those harnesses if you know? Thanks again for all the help! Have a happy Thanksgiving.
