Diode across coil on a relay?

best way to understand..

take a relay, connect +12 to #30, #87a to #85, and #86 to ground.. then touch 85 & 86 at the same time with your fingers... :)

What I'd like to know is how to install the diode across the coil. If I have a relay, and a harness connected to it (so I have 5 wires hanging down), can I just splice open 85 and 86's wires, and put the diode in there? Like in the picture below...rough example.

yes, that's fine.. then make sure to use 85 as positive..

this may be a stupid question but does it make a difference if you put the diode where the picture shows(above) or on the actual pins on the relays?

no, it doesn't matter.. just be careful not to melt the relay if you solder.. Diode across coil on a relay? - Page 2 -- posted image.
