Is it the original battery? Have you used a volt meter to verify that the voltage does increase when the engine is running?
Possible causes are: Defective battery. Defective Stator, or voltage regulator. Bad Connections. Is there a fuse labeled "Charge"? Have you checked it?

If the battery won't keep charge and it's open circuit (not connected to anything - ie, no loads), then the battery is stuffed.
If "stuffed" from poor maintenance or charging, it may be possible to rejuvenate it (equalisation and pulse charging etc).
If it's age, it's dead.
