Hello,
The question is in the title. I'm looking at 5" mids with foam. It seems like the smaller the driver, the less of an issue. It seems that way from me, not as much by experience, but by thinking it out. I think the smaller the cone and less the excursion, the less "work" the foam does supporting the cone, the less likely some deterioration is to become a problem. Personal experience wise, I don't recall ever seeing the foam broken on a midrange driver, now on a 6 x 9 for that matter (I don't think I've owned a 6 x 9 with foam surround for 35 years). Am I wrong?
Is there a benefit to foam over paper or rubber? Maybe more compliant for some better performance?
TIA,
jon

Foam surrounds from the 70's tended to deteriorate. Today's foam not so much of an issue. Usually it's used as a cost saving material.

Thanks DY. I went ahead and ordered the mids. Time to play is my big problem now, more than money is, so if the foam dies in a few years, i'll just frisbe them and buy new.
