Hi all,
I would like to get a general idea of what range other installers & ppl in general get from their aftermarket remote starters (as well as the alarm make and model).
I have a 2-Way Fortin RF kit (3000 ft of range) w/ an Evo-One on my vehicle and have been disappointed w/ the inconsistent range. The best I have been able to get is around 900ft of range give or take -- granted the were several trees and buildings around the place.
I currently have the antenna mounted vertically on the middle part of the windshield in the dotted section. I have read that due to the "lead" contents in the dotted part, I should avoid it but as the vehicle doesn't have any tint on the top, I am worried exposing the antenna in the clear section would look out of place.
I contacted Fortin (great service) & they said I should try to place the "pointy" part of the antenna outside the dotted section & the best range they have gotten in their testing is around 2500ft of range in open field.
As a small time installer, I want to be able to give my client's realistic expectation on fob range.

I mostly install Viper/Clifford two way systems. Viper 4204/5301/4706.
The 4204/5301 type have good range from the checkout of Walmart to the middle of the parking lot. Medium size store.
The 4706 type have a good half mile range. Mine will reach the truck from the back of Walmart to the middle of the parking lot. It has reached accross the lake a half mile. And about a quarter mile through heavy wooded area to my truck in the garage.
Those are my observations.
I definately keep the antennas off of the dotted area of the windshield.
When all else fails, Read the Instructions

Thanks for your feedback.. I have adjusted my antenna location again (still in the dotted section) and seem to be getting better range.
I tried putting it outside the section but can't stand how unfinished it looks since the top section of the windshield isn't tinted.
I hope others can chime in on what range they get on their various alarm systems as well...

My Viper 2way led claims 2500ft of range. I have no issues starting it from the back of stores. I can't remember what model number it is. It's an alarm with remote start and 2way led. It's a previous model before they went to 1mile range

Thanks for the feedback.
I have contacted the seller I purchased my Fortin RF kit from and they claim that they have had other customers complains about range issues as well. They recommended I try one of their Compustar kits so I am waiting for that.
Btw, are these forums usually this quiet? Expected more replies and I can see from the thread stats that this thread has had over 180 views?? Do ppl just not want to post?
