2001 Kia Spectra Cruise Control Install

i have a universal cc to install on my Kia.  have never installed a cruise control, however, willing to give it a go!  question i have is - am I getting over my head?  don't have any specific questions as yet (still waiting for cruise control to arrive via mail).  can anyone offer any suggestions or general tips before i begin?

  • Solder all connections
  • use a DMM
  • have patience
  • use shrink wrap tubing on all external connections

Here is the VSS Information for the 2001 Kia:

VSS Wire: LOCATION 5- POSITION 42 OF ECM

VSS Wire Color: ORANGE / BLACK
VSS Pulse: 4000
VSS Tach Wire: LOCATION 5- POSITION 47 OF ECM
Tach Signal Wire Color: GREEN
Brake Switch Positive: YELLOW
Brake Switch Negative: ORANGE

Here is the rest of the information on the ignition wires needed:

  • | 12V|red or black        |+  |ignition harness            |
    | STARTER|BLACK / YELLOW        |+  |ignition harness            |
    | IGNITION|WHITE/ blue          |+  |ignition harness            |
    | SECOND IGNITION|white               |+  |ignition harness            |
    | ACCESSORY|green               |+  |ignition harness            |
    | POWER LOCK|add actuator        |   |in driver door              |
    | POWER UNLOCK|same                |   |                            |
    | PARKING LIGHTS +|pink/black          |   |DKP in white 18 pin plug    |
    | PARKING LIGHTS -|green               |   |headlight switch            |
  • | TACHOMETER|yellow/white        |   |plug on strut tower         |

thanks for advice.  What is DMM?  And what external connections are there?  Also, do i have to get into all of those ignition harness connections?

A DMM is a digital multimeter used for measuring the voltages of target wires. You will need to access some of the ignition wires for the CC unit but not all of them. I have listed all the ignition wires but use only the ones that the installation manual asks for.
