My remote starter will only work with my key in the ignition to the on or acc position. What do I need to check to troubleshoot this issue?

i am guessing that this is a GM or Ford vehicle. there is a security chip in the key that the ignition system needs to see....there are some way to bypass it.... you can use a resister or there are a few kits that you can use. or get a key blank and tie it near the ignition tumbler

What year and model is this vechile?

This could be any vehicle out on the road. As thepencil stated, give us the make, model & year of the vehicle and we can help you better. Chances are you just need to get a bypass module installed or need to install it properly to bypass the chip in the key.

It is a 1998 Olds Intrigue equipped with Passlock II. I have DesignTech's 20402 Universal Bypass module installed, but I guess it's not hooked up right. Would the PLDATA bypass module be a better route since it's a little easier to install? If so, I have a question about the PLDATA's bypass module wiring instructions. ( http://www.bypasskit.com/product.aspx?prodid=PLDATA&catid=3) It says to hook the brown wire up to the starter ground, but the only gound that I have is the ground on the starter that is hooked up the the chasis ground. Is this the ground it specifies? If so, why does it say black grounds to chasis, brown grounds to remote starter ground when the go the same place, im a little confused in that aspect.

The BROWN wire that the module requires is a wire that is oNLY ground when remote started. The wire has nothing on it until remote activation has begun. This is where the problem is on your installation . Try ground this wire on the 20402 and see if the car cranks over and stays running.

Problem is that I don't have a ground only when remote started wire. Here is a list of all the wires on alarm.

Here is how I have the universal bypass module (DesignTech 20402) wired:

Here is a digram for Negative Ignition 1 output, (Con 2 pin 6). The alarm manual says this is for over-riding the Passkey II. I did not hook this wire up because I do not understand the part I highlighted in the picture below, what wire is to be cut on the 'To VATS DECODER MODULE'?, and what wire do I tap into for 'To INGNITION Key Switch'. This wire not being connected is probably my problem, right?

What kind of remote starter is that ? Check to see if the ORANGE wire ( ground when armed ) also can be programmed to act as a ground when running. The highlighted area that you have refers to the Passlock II wires that you can access at the ignition harness behind the radio. There are two wires ( small 16-18 gauge ) and you only need to tape into the YELLOW one as refrenced by the diagram.

The alarm is a Mannix SM700, http://www.mannixusa.com/e-catalog.htm. The orange wire can only be used to control the starter kill relay.

So I would simply connect 87a on the relay to keyside of yellow passlock wire, 30 to engine side, and 87 to black wire? Could I use the same connections that the universal bypass module uses to cut the yellow wire and bypass it, and and the same tap as the black wire uses?
