Gently pry off wood trim on either side of factory HU, unscrew two bolts on each side of radio.

There is no wood trim. the vent, radio, a\c control cluster is surronded by leather dash. The radio has a hidden hole on either side, simular to Ford factory hu, but  does not release the same way. These holes are shallow and do not seem to depress or move in any way.   ???

Is there a strip of plastic ( shiney ) about 2" tall that runs from the right side of the radio to the pass side air vent?

No. After a little research I believe I may need a special tool, but I am unsure wether I may be able to just use an allen wrench. This is a friends car so I am unable to check now. Have you ever seen this?

Sounds like a pre 1998 BMW. If there is a small plastic door over each hole then yes it is an allen key. Be very careful about getting the right size allen wrench and make sure the screw is in fact turning, these are really easy to strip out.
