ok this is my newest project and i need some help. we had a black out earlier this week and i was prepared i had electricity with invertors and a old car battery but when the battery got low i had to charge it with my cars charging system so this is what i want to build.
a portable H/O alt system that consist of a alternator a battery a starting motor, digital voltometer and two invertors. so heres my thoughts i will have a battery 12v that will start the motor thus giving the alternator to turn and generate power after this comes into play i would like the alt to take over and the motor to stop thus the alt to charge the battery and and provide power to the invertors can this be done.

It CAN be done, although you'll still need to find a way to charge your batteries. The motor will take more power to turn then the alternator will provide - it's simple physics - there is no such thing as a "free energy" machine.
You would be better off using a gasoline motor and keeping a few gallons on hand!

true that was one of the things i had in condsideration. thats why one of my thoughts was a hi output alt. or could i put the motor on a relay to shut off when the alt kicks in. what is your suggestion

If your challenge is to change the laws of physics you are on the right path.
Start with basic research, find an HO alternator and find out how much HP (yes, HP) it takes to produce full output. HP can be expressed as wattage, 1HP = 746 watts. You can then calculate how big your motor needs to be to spin the alternator. Once you know that, you can calculate how much power the motor will need and then you can compare that to the output of the alternator.
Assume you're alternator needs 10HP to turn and outputs 300A at full load. It would need 8234W to turn. Assuming a base voltage of 14.4V that is 571A of power needed (assuming a non existent 100% efficient electric motor).
You are in for one heck of a challenge!

I thought motor meant engine...
If it doesn't (involve a petrol etc engine), then still_walkin, trust us - there is absolutely NO CHALLENGE involved. |

And you wouldn't have those 6 x 9s in the same area as the 12s would you?
