first off this is going in an 04 mazda6s, infinity kappa perfect 10.1, alpine mrd m605 amp, stock hu through pac trunk loc I mainly want sq but also a moderate amount of spl, i've had systems that made my vision blurry and I don't want that anymore just  reasonably loud w/ high sq .I am looking for some input as I will soon be either building or having a box custom made possibly from http://www.klausaudio.com/ .I modeled a box with winisd ( I'm a total newbie to this type of software)using the infinity kappa perfect 10.1, I started with a 3 cu ft box tuned to 22 hz, and it looks great,  but of course there is a port length issue....how much air velocity is acceptable in a car? and is there a sq difference in port styles, ie: flared tube better or worse than slot type? I would like to make the box close to 41"w x12dx14high, the width and hiegth can't change,  that comes out to 2.92 cu ft and the port has to either come out the front or back(no top or ends)... Now is 22hz a little overboard, cause I like to really feel and hear the lows, I listen to everything but country, real jazz(no kenny g new age crap)classic rock, metal, soul, r+b , rap, everything. So I need a well rounded sound, Some upright bass notes hit in the low 30's or less. and I know I have some rap that gets well into the 30's if not the mid 20hz range. I have the sub in  a .6 cu ft sealed box stuffed to bajesus per mfr. rec. and it sounds great just not very loud. spec sheet says in the 90 to 95 db range. I figure to come out right on the port I will have around 2.5 +cu ft of air space left. based on that volume how would 24 hz be? Sorry about rambling on but I just want to cover everything. Thanks for your time, and I'll try to check back often but my wife is a Nazi enclosure modeling for kappa perfect10.1 -- posted image.and she keeps me on lock so please be patient with me.

Why not use the recommended vented box?  Per http://manuals.harman.com/INF/CAR/Boxes%20and%20Parameters/P10.1d_f.pdf

It's a lot easier to make a sealed box oversized than it is a ported box.  Note the in-car response shown in the graph;  a peak at 35-36 Hz, which should be very good for this, or just about any, sub.  If I were in your shoes, I would use what's recommended.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

correct me if I'm wrong, but that wouldn't offer much better spl than the sealed box that I already have, and certainly not any better sq right? I woulg live with a little loss of sq for a noticable gain in spl,  I just don't want to go through box after box after box to get one that sounds good. Do you really think that this box is well rounded and suited fo sq? Thank you very much for your input

Look at it this way:  it wouldn't be far-fetched to think that if this sub performed better in a larger vented box, Infinity would have recommended a larger size.  It would be easy to go bigger than 1 cu ft...(whereas some subs really need much more volume but the manufacturers keep the limited space of the vehicle in mind when they recommend a smaller size).  But in those cases you're still talking about at least 2+ cu ft per sub.  So, for Infinity to keep this at 1 cu ft is telling to me, in itself.

And to answer your last question, no, a vented box will not give you greater SQ than a sealed, but this subwoofer will perform best in a vented box (according to the EBP found in the parameters).  And you will maximize SPL this way, too.

My recommendations, other than already said are:  for more SPL add more cone area and amplification.  For better SQ switch the OEM deck for an aftermarket model.  You're system will always be limited in SQ using a speaker-level signal.  I use the OEM deck in my car, but I realize the limitations it imposes on my system.  (...still sounds good but I would hesitate to enter an SQ contest ;)

As long as you have the parameters of that sub correctly entered in your WinISD, and you understand how this program works completely...experiment with box volume.  Enter the volume of the manufacturer-recommended box incl. port size and look at the results.  Use the input tab to put in total RMS power that will be applied.  Then, if you want to experiment in making changes, work little by little from that point.  Check the port noise using the SPL chart, rear port air velocity.  Set your chart to read ft/sec at rms power.  Keep it under 100 ft/sec by adjusting port diam and length, if needed.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

the dash kits are out there, my friend did one on his 05. Its like the whole built in head unit with AC and everything in it too correct. I remember those and taurus's suck in that manner. i have 2 12" kappas and love them. the SQ is very good, youll like it.
