Hello, I just had an Avital 4103 remote start installed and the installer tells me the rear defroster cannot be connected without an additional relay and that the remote trunk release feature will then be lost!  Hope someone can confirm this is incorrect and tell us it's done.  thanks!!

Correct that you need a relay. For trunk pop to be retained on your new remote you have to add a relay as well for it to work. It usually will not work on the old remote while the remote start is running.

From another thread I received this reply which says the opposite.

QUOTE=chriswallace187]Your installer is mistaken. Read on...

You can view the Avital's manual here. On page 48 is half of the wiring pinout.
I can't think of any reason why your installer would have used something other than the "RED / White (-) 200ma channel 2" output for the trunk release, since it's designed primarily as a trunk release output.
For the rear window defogger, he'd use the "Blue/White 2nd status output/defogger" wire. This could be connected in one of 3 ways:
1. Directly to a wire from the defogger switch which goes to ground momentarily when the switch is pressed.
2. Directly to a wire from the climate control panel(if the defogger switch is integrated into it) or the defogger relay which activates the relay and stays at ground for as long as the defogger's active.
3. To an add-on relay which powers the high current wire going to the defogger grid itself.
Information on programming the defogger output wire(Menu 2, Option 8) is found from pages 32 to 40 of the PDF manual. For method 1 of connection that I've just stated, program the output to "pulsed". For methods 2 or 3 program it to "latched".[/QUOTE]
