I'm in the market for a new DMM. My old cheap Radio Shack DMM died on me and I need to get a new one. I been wanting to upgrade to a new one but money is tight. I have been looking around and I know Fluke makes solid devices but they are expensive. I wanted to get your guys input. I do basic car electronics installs as side income. I was looking at the Fluke 115. What options should I be looking for. I want something to last me a while.
Thanks
Carlos

You will be happy with that meter.  I own that exact one as well as probably 15 other Fluke meters.  The new 11  (110 111 112 113 115 117) series is my favorite of all.

My $26 (and later $10 sellout with temperature) DMMs with back-light & sample and hold have been great. Probably well over 10 years old by now.

I once wanted a fluke 77 series but wasn't quite prepared to spend that much.

If spending big now, I'd get a true-RMS ($45 upwards), or true-RMS with (say) 600A AC and DC current (~$140).

The only auto-ranger I have includes capacitance. That cost $35 and is a small unit in a robust plastic "book" type housing.

I have had good luck with Craftsman meters. They have some very reasonably priced auto ranging meters that do frequency (which is nice for finding tach wires for remote starts).

They are not as fast to respond as a Fluke, but you can pick one up for $30.
