when i start my truck up i get a whine/moan from the engine bay. not really sure if it's the alt but i only hear it at idle, then when i drive around i don't hear it, but when i hit a stoplight i hear it again. any guesses?

It's only happening at lower RPM's which makes me think that it might be your fan belt. What kind of vehicle is this ? If it has a unibelt, then it might be a bearing on one of the connecting devices , but if you have separate belts for all your engine components, then it will be harder to pin point the problem.
