Hey All \i have a 98 GMC K1500 Z71 extended cab pickup. I am looking to replace the 4x6 rear corner speakers and need to figure out the easiest way to remove those bad boys. There is no "grill" so to speak so it looks like I'll have to pull the corner panels off. What's the best way to go about this in order to avoid damage or excess work? Thought I'd ask here before i start ripping things apart. Thanks in advance!

Im pretty sure you have to pull the panels off. But to save yourself some trouble most autoparts stores have clip seperaters and doesn't break them.

Thanks for the quick response! I actually have a clip separator tool for GM's - I invested in one after trying to take the door panels of my '94 Z28 without one lol. On the upside the weather is suppose to be nice for the next couple days ..... sounds like a good driveway project! Thx again.

One other question about this. Does anyone know for sure where the speaker wires for each side is chased from the front to the back of the extended cab? I'm thinking it should go along the floor or each side below the plastic kick and door plate trim? Can anyone confirm this or alternately let me know where it chases front to back before I end up strippin' the whole interior of the truck lol. Thx

cut them. otherwise you WILL breack the top panel (above the rear window) just use an airsaw and slowly cut the plastic grill and start trimming them out

If you want to install the speakers properly, you will need to remove all the trim parts and rear seat to get the rear side panels out. Take out the rear bench seat, the seat belt mechanisms, the trim panel below the rear window (pull bottom forwards to release clips and then pull upwards to release upper clips), side panels can then be removed. The roof panel stays because it has screws holding it which are covered by the side trim panels. The side trim has tabs which feed under this roof panel, so you need to pull the bottoms towards the other side of the truck to get them out. It will take you about 1 hour to do it provided you can get the seat belt bolts loose.
Don't hack into the panels. The rear speakers are actually mounted into the steel body. Make sure you check for rattles after you are done and while you are re-installing everything.

To remove the stock 4x6 speakers you'll have to spend about 2 hours pulling off all the panels. That includes removing the seat belts. When you pry off those panels, my suggestion is to get a firm grip, spread out your hands to apply even pressure, and then yank really hard. I used to have an 89 gmc pickup so I've definitely been there.
As for the wires, if I remember correctly they run up the passenger side and then over to the driver side but you'll basically be taking apart the paneling for the whole back half anyways.
