Is there a particular type of sander you prefer that does a better job than others? DA sander, orbital, air , or electric. Basically, what gets into the tight spots for the initial 60grit sand job and is able to do a decent job finishing as well?

I use a DA and a mouse sander they work excellent for just about any job

I use a Hutchins 4500 6 inch air orbital sander. it has an attachment handle that helps out if you are sanding large areas, and the air nozzel plugs into the handle so it doesnt get in your way.... I also use a snap-on 3 inch air DA orbital sander. it comes with a sponge type pad that helps out a lot in the tight curves. it you have a lot of material to take off, a lot of times a a die grinder with a small backing plate and large disc( i.e.- 1 inch backing plate and a 3 inch disc) works well.

this gives you some give in the curves.......installguy509
