what bluetooth kit are you planning on using?
If you havent picked one out yet check out the motorola ihf -1000. I'd had some experience w/ it and its so much better than the other units I've seen in and out of my install bay. Now, as far as using your existing aftermarket head unit, you could wire up a relay up to the (-) mute output from the bluetooth kit to the ACC wire of the radio. That way when the bluetooth kits wants to mute, the radio will turn off untill it was done.

Im sure there are lots of other ways to go about doing it.I used the same method above on a 07 mustang because even though the factory radio had a mute button, and are harness on the wall had a mute wire ...there was no mute wire in behind the factory radio.Wired it up w/ a relay to ACC and radio would turn off until the bluetooth was done then turn itself back on. And since your using acc 12v to turn the radio off, it acts just like the key, so you dont lose your presets, clock, etc.
