I am installing a pre-empt strobe light in a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria and the light has two wires that will disable the light if either wire sees ground or + 12v. The only problem is that the wires need to see the ground or 12v constantly to keep the light disabled. What I would like to do is have the light turn off when the car is put into park. Does anyone know if the Crown Victoria has any type of trigger wire (either ground or 12v) that I can tap into to disable the light ONLY when the car is in park. I have heard of this being done but cannot get any infor from another local installer in my area. Thanks for any help !!!!

What type of pre-emption unit are you using? You may be able to get the desired signal from the neutral-safety switch.

It is a Nova micro dash strobe unit. Here are links to the unit and install instructions. It has feeds for either ground or 12v to turn it off. Where is the neutral safety switch on the Crown Vic ? Is it a ground trigger ? Thanks for your help !! What I would do would be to hook up the red to your primary warning lights, black to ground, and n/c to the rest. There is no legitimate use for pre emption without having primary lighting on, and no use for primary warning when on a scene

Ok, what I will do is have the pre-empt strobe on only when the switch box selected to position 3 (code response) which allows the headlights to alternate, corner strobes to be activated, and intersection strobes on lightbar to be activated. I will have to switch to position 2 when making traffic stops or on accident scenes to avoid confusing the nearby intersections.

Its only logical. Position 3 / Code Response should have all your warning lights on. Position 2 / On Scene should basically just have minimal colors & slow flash rates to reduce the moth effect. I have seen several sheriff cruisers in my neck of the woods using dual pre-emption units, with the second firing to the rear and selectable as well.
I saw this a few weeks ago when someone was pulled over on a very busy stretch of road. By preempting both the lights in front and behind the squad (they were <1/4 mile apart), the officer was able to effectively stop traffic on the road along side of him, so that he and the traffic offender could get back into traffic I am glad it is easy up by me- we use the Sonem 2000 system, which activates off of the siren. No extra eqpt to install, and cannot be stealthed like opticoms can

Yep, it will be the easiest way to install the strobe so I don't have to worry about spending an entire day to install a light. I don't need a second pre-empt unit because all I am looking for is code response convienence with the intersections. I will be running code from home and some of the callout locations are across two counties. I have another pre-empt unit that is infrared if you know anyone who may be interested in purchasing it. Due to un-authorized use and media attention given to the mirt, the opticom systems in the areas that use them are encoded- not your jurisdiction, they don't give you a code.

No code for our systems yet. There really has not been a problem with unauthorized use of them, at least not that I have seen. To upgrade the systems it is very expensive and requires that every public safety agency purchases new units which is not going to happen. It is just too expensive for them. I just need it because I am a K9 handler and it provides substantial safety for me, my dog, and the public when trying to respond to calls in my jurisdiction or other ones. What amazes me is that it is more difficult to buy a pre-empt strobe than a gun here in Illinois !!! Go Figure ...
