Subject: Subwoofer Not Hitting All Notes
Date Posted: September 29, 2008 at 7:06 PM

I just installed a new pioneer TS-W3001D4  1000 watt RMS and 3000watt peak subwoofer into my 06 explorer with the Audiophile system.  Its not hitting every note like it should, even when I had my old subwoofer in there it still didnt hit all the notes.  The Headunit is a Pioneer D3, and the amp is a Kenwood KAC-7251 (amp is only 460 rms).  I had this same setup minus the subwoofer ( i had a old pioneer installed) in my 06 F-150 and it hit every note just fine.  So I don't know what is going on with it.  Any help would be apperciated.

What notes is it not hitting on?   Upper bass,  lower bass?      What frequency is the crossover of the sub out on the D3 set to?     Is there a low pass crossover on the amp?   What frequency is it set to?

mostly on the lows, and some mids. i have the headunit's sub crossover set at 80 hertz and i have the amp's crossover set on low pass, with the input frequency set at around 80 hertz.

what enclosure is the sub in...sounds like a poor enclosure

I have no idea what you mean by "not hitting all the notes," but here's two thoughts.  First, use one crossover or the other.  If you want to use the HU low-pass, defeat the one on the amp (or set it to its highest setting.)  Second, is the amp staying on continuously or is it cutting out?  If it's cutting in and out, I bet your gain is way too high.

With the crossover set to 80 Hertz, I would expect no mid bass to come from the woofer. Try setting the crossover to 120 Hz. to see if it gives you some of what you say is missing.

My vote is improper tuning of the enclosure. Does it unload? What I mean is this: does it flap or move dramatically even down low, there's just no or very little output? That's improper tuning of the enclosure.

It all reminds me of something that Moličre once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Yes, if the enclosure is unloading the woofer it might sound like a wet fart instead of a "note."  Of course I hear systems every day that sound like wet farts so I assume this is desired by some users...

ok i think its the sub. i tried 3 different boxes, ad tried all different kinds of settings and it still deosent hit right. i put an old subwoofer of mine in to test it out and it worked awesome. so i'm gonna return this sub and get a JL 12 inch W3..hopefully the quality is better with that..

you still haven't answered what enclosure...my guess is crappy too small tuned too high prefabs.

I still don't understand what you mean by "not hitting all notes."  Is it cutting in and out?  Is it simply not playing sounds that you know are there?  Is it making strange noises instead of tones?  What?

Mostly on the lows it doesn't hit at all. the sub barely moves.  it hits the highs fine and some mid bass, but the lows blow.

and also while listening to it, the sub gives off a burning smell from time to time.  is this beacuse its new?

Does your amp have a low pass filter?  Where is it set?  Does it have a subsonic filter?  Where is it set?  As far as a burning smell, no this is never good and often indicates the amp is clipping.  Did you set your gain properly?

I bet it's a DVC and the coils are paralleled out of phase.

It's probably a prefab that is tuned too high...

well he states that the sub barely moves and that he's smelling burnt coils.  Definitely the voice coils wired out of phase.

yes it is a DVC 4ohm. in have it wired as 8 ohms and it is running off my 4ohm stable amp. I tried to wire it different way but it still doesnt sound good. My friend has the same sub wired to 2 ohms running off a 2ohm amp and his does the same thing as mine.

I just tired a L7 in there today and it hit everything high low and mid. it was amazing. I was 10 times louder than the pioneer.

So i just think that these subs are crap.

If the amp is bridged on the sub and it is moving on certain notes, it is not wired out of phase.

subwoofer is not the problem...enclosure is 90% of the sound.

i tried 3 different enclosures all different sizes and they all sounded the same.  Its the subs

i bet all of the enclosures were prefab...still enclosure would be the problem...doesn't matter how many prefabs you try.

Prefabs are not one size fits all...some subs require different volumes and tunings to sound the way you want.

if you have another system set up the same way with the same subwoofer then you could be correct that they are crap.  But I've personally seen the pioneer you speak of and it hits low, loud, and is pretty impressive for a pioneer.  Disconnect one voice coil and test it out.  Then try the other voice coil by itself.  You may have a bad coil.
