port, vented enclosure

I'm planning on building a custom box for my 94 Ford Ranger Splash. I have about 32" across the back, behind my seats to work with. I want to put 2 12" Power Acoustik STW-12's in it. Is it possible to vent this? Can anyone give me some dimensions? Or show how to build a proper vent for these speakers?

Ok, so I've done some calculations, and some figuring. I need some help though on the ports. I'm doing vents. I'm not sure how you HAVE to do vents? Can they just be straight? Or must they wind and stuff throughout the box? Here's my idea... Tell me how it sounds.

I'm basically taking the above idea, and building a custom truck box for my 2 12" Power Acoustik STW-12's. So the box will sit up like that one does, not like the picture below does, but if you flip the box below, you can see how it would sit.



Again... Flip the above image to look basically like the Kicker Comp's.

Height 1: 8"
Depth: 17"
Width: 32"
Height 2: 5"
Box Volume: 1.36791, so this gives the subs some room to breath, they'll be in a common chamber. If I divided the chamber in 2 it'd only be like .56 volume, which is well below what these subs require.

Now... For the Venting...

Width: 6.5"
Height: 2.5"

I'm not sure exactly what to tune it to? I did 35 hz? I'm trying to get some big bang out of these subs. Is 35 hz good? If so the required vent length will be about 22.8", so I was gonna do a vent on each side of the bottom of the box, so do 11.4" vents.

My ultimate question now is, Can I just cut out that rectangular cut out, like on the Kicker box... And just take like 3 strips of wood (keeping them so they make a long chamber with that rectangle just straight through the bottom of the box.)? Or must they intertwine throughout the box like I've seen in photos?

I'd also like to know about the tuning part. Is 35 hz good for big bass? I'm not sure what that determines, but 35 hz seems to be common.

I am in the same boat as you rt now. I have looked at different ported boxes locally and have found some ports with just straight walls and some with "L" at the back. I could not find any Hz. spec for your speaker. I would try to get that spec. I would think 35hz would be just fine. I have decided to just keep my ports straight using the sides of the box and 2 separate walls for remainder of the port. Best of luck to you.

So it's fine to just make the port a straight tunnel? It doesn't have to curve or anything? And ok, yeah. I didn't think about looking up my speakers Hz. They're discontinued, so I'm not sure how easy that will be.

Well, if you think about it the old-school round ports were straight. The curves just make the port longer for proper tuning of hz.

Well, that's understandable. But I wasn't sure if the vented ports needed to wind. Cuz that's all I've seen. I wasn't sure if straight vents would work? Because my vent doesn't have to be too long ya know? Both vents will be like... 7.4" a piece.

BUT, I do need to know if it'll work fine, having 2 subs in a common chamber? With splitting the required port length? It requires 14.8" in length. Will it still be tuned to 35 hz if I take that 14.8", and cut it in half and put 2 vents on each side of the box. So each vent will be 7.4"? Will that still work? Or does it HAVE to be the one long 14.8" vent?

I have never seen a ported box with "common" chamber. Typically the sealed enclosures use single common chamber. So, I would say no...there should be two separate ported chambers. Would be nice if the experts would chime in on this even though there probably is a thread somewhere on this forum that has been beat to death already on this subject. :)

Yeah, I was told that putting 2 subs in a common chamber is fine. I had that question answered earlier this week. If I do 2 separate boxes, I will be limiting my woofer's air space. It'll be less than they require. The one big common chamber will give them pretty much the perfect air space.

I just need to know if it HAS to be the one 14" long vent, or if I can make it 2 vents in the common chamber. Just each chamber be 7" long?
