Hi everyone, have new problem with my dvd,cd deck. have everything installed the right way, dvd works, cd works radio works can get every fm stereo station but can not get even one am station. will not pickup any even it i tune it right to the station number what is wrong.

Hi just posted about no am radio stations on my dvd cd deck, forgot to put in the make of truck. It is a 1996 gmc .

Assuming that you were getting AM reception prior to the installation of the new radio, I would suspect a bad antenna adapter possibly. If that doesn't solve your problem, I would meter the outer shielding of the antenna. It should read 0 ohms.

I'm having the exact same problem. Do you get a lot of engine noise when you when tune to AM ? I do. Not on any FM chanells or while listening to cd's. Just thought I'd ask....maybe it'll clue someone in to a diagnoses.

Rule of thumb is if you have FM, but no AM, it's most likely an antenna issue... check the antenna/connections. -------------  the12volt • Support the12volt.com

not only have i done that, i have put in a new wire. It did not help one bit. And i do have some engine noise as well. think i will be trying a second new radio too see if that changes things.

But the factory radio works fine with the old and the new antenna wire. The other strange thing is when you run a scan for radio channels it will not pick them up, you have to tune it to them and lock them in.

To check the antenna, you need an ohm meter. There are 2 circuits for an antenna. The center pin should have less than 0.5 ohms resistance from the radio end to the antenna mast. It should infinite resistance/open to the shield of the antenna cable. The antenna shield should also have less than 0.5 ohms resistance to ground for a cable length less than 5 feet. If the center pin is shorted to ground/shield, you will get no AM reception and poor FM. If there is a lot of resistance to ground on the antenna shield, you will get noise on the radio, especially on the AM band. Some vehicles also use an antenna module/amplifier which requires power to work. Your truck doesn't have this option though. If it is easy enough, plug in the old radio and try it on AM. If it works the antenna is OK and you either have a bad antenna adaptor or the new radio is bad.
