sound quality subs, amps?

everyday I am getting more and more into SQ, guess this may come with age perhaps.  What size subwoofers do you like for SQ.  I have heard most people like 8"  or 10".  I use to have a Adire audio Tempest  (Like 5 years ago) in a 4 cube sealed box run with 100watts and thought it had good SQ.  Any disadvantage to running larger subs? 

For comparison, i have a 12" memphis M3 with 600 watts ported.  Great SPL and ok SQ. Just did an install with 2 Memphis mclass 8" 400 watts sealed.  i think they sound great. 

What do you look for in a SQ Sub?  What about an amp to power it/them, what do you look for?

The problem most always comes down to the "mid'bass". This issue is different depending on the car and the location of the bass drivers.
Ideally you would have the mid bass and all the frequencies coming from the same location as in a proper front stage setup. However this is often not very practical.
So some like to have 10" play a more broad range of bass, even to the upper 100Hz range. This makes that mid range frequency sound awkward and murky because your ears are trying to "locate" where the sound is coming from. You'll be surprise how well an accustomed hear can pick up those low tones.
In my car i have 4 sets of 6.5" mbquarts that provide that mid-bass and a single Fi Bl 10" for the lows.
The greatest obstacle in my opinion is the ROAD NOISE! I think I've spent almost as much money and time on dynamat, and other sound deadening materials, as equipment itself.

What I always ask my customers is what kind of music they listen to. Rock I would suggest 10" subs in sealed box for great tight bass especially with double bass pedals in music, and for rap something from 12" to 15" vented for a louder bass experience but its less accurate.

You are going to catch some flak for that statement. You can't say that a 10" sub on a sealed enclosure is going to be more accurate than a 12" in a ported enclosure because it all depend on the driver. And how well the enclosure has been designed.

That's right.  And don't forget the impact of the installation technique and quality.  For me a good SQ subwoofer system will create a Qtc in-car of approximately 0.577 and be EQ'd to reduce cabin gain to approach flat responce to 20Hz..  There are as many ways to achieve that as there are installers.

I appreciate the response,  but understand the statement is based on a starting point with a customer,  friend , or person with general question, the forum is for the general audience and for the new guys I think its a great start, the box and design is 75% of the sq on a professional standpoint, but it all depends on whos listening, thanks for the feedback.
