2008 Chevrolet Silverado (new body style) with stock headunit and no bose

I just finished installing an amp and Polk 6.5" components in this truck on the stock headunit with a line out converter. To be honest, it sounds like crap. The highs are just too harsh unless you turn the treble down so much it sounds muffled, and the bass you just can't hear because of the highs. Is there any way to make it sound decent without putting in a different headunit with better EQ controls? I don't like the look of an aftermarket headunit in this dash unless it were a double din screen, but that's quite expensive.
