i have a 2003 chevy malibu and i just bought a JVC radio for it. the guys at best buy said i need a wiring harness to install it but i put a sony radio into my brothers 95 jeep a few years ago without one, do i really need one or can i just cut the wires and connect them to the new radio? also the antenna wire doesnt fit into the back of the new radio, what should i do to make it fit?

Its easier if you use the harness because then its just plug and play..also if in the future you want to replace the radio...u already have the harness so its less of a hassle to change it. If you really know what your doing..then don't use the harness...but why would you want to tear up your harness? I wouldn't do that unless the harness doesn't exist for the car...in your case it does..

Harness = an adapter that will plug into the plug that you removed from the back of the OEM radio. It has about 8 inches of wire, plus the box that contains the new dinger and the relay for switched power. You do not have to run any wires.

the one the best buy guy tried to sell me was $100 and had like 20ft for each wire.

there is something with wires that came in the box with the radio that i bought with only a short amount of wires to it and it plugs into the radio and the other ends of the wires have nothing connected to it. is that the wire your talking about?

No...thats the radio harness. the harness you need has a module to keep the factory chime so that if you leave your door open or whatever it will warn you...you dont need that one...they sell you that one because its the most convenient..i sell it here in my store for 15 dollars the one you need. go to a regular mom and pop shop and ask for the Chevy/Pontiac/Toyota 2000-03,MAD GWH-416..thats the chevy harness..

so i get the "Chevy/Pontiac/Toyota 2000-03,MAD GWH-416" and plug that into the wire already connected to the car and then connect the ends of those wires to the ends of the wires that came with the radio, and thats it?

you'll also have to run a switched 12volt wire from you ignition harness.
That's probably why best buy offered you the 100 dollar harness. it's because most diyers are too stupid to read the piece of paper that comes with the 70-2003 harness, and come back saying it's the wrong harness.

The guy at worst buy was trying to sell you a metra 70-2003T harness. Notice the T at the end of the part number. That harness is only for the 00 to the 02 model of that car. Those year vehicles use the factory radio to change settings of the vehicle. The 03 model uses a different harness. The harness for your car should not be 20 feet long. The T harness sells for around 40 dollars. The harness you need does sell for around 100 dollars. You need a pac-audio.com C2R-GM24 or equivalent.

no they were actually likely selling a data module of some sort. likely a gmlan2sr, or gmos01 or something along those lines. those pretty much just give you your r.a.p. wire along with door chimes.

The reason I "Thought" they were trying to sell him a T harness is because he said that it was 20 feet long.

A Metra 70-2003 will get your radio working.  You will have to connect the red wire of the radio to a switched power source.

i finally got the metra 70-2003 in the mail but what wires on it connect to the new radio? the wire colors on the metra70 dont match up to the wires from the car so i dont know which ones goto the speakers and the other wires. also what switched power source should i use?

i figured out the wire color problem but i still cant figure out where a switched power source is. i also want to know if its okay to ground the radio to a metal bar that runs behind the radio, theres a screw in it that holds a plastic piece to it but the screw goes into the bar.

The harness should have come with a piece of red wire.  You need to run this wire to the fuse box.  There should be at least one fuse in the fuse box that only has power on it when the key is in the on position.  The ring terminal you use to ground the deck should really be in direct contact with the metal of the dash.

use the harness ground that's why it's there.
run you switched to the ignition switch accessory wire and fuse it.
