hi all,just wondering if its ok to put tweeters in the kick panel area?i was gonna put them in the door but i really dont wanna cut into the door panel.someone told me the imaging is optimum at the kick panel.any advice would be greatly appreciated,thanks

I've never heard that before. In fact, everything I've heard about kick panels is the "factory" location is not the best for imaging. To me, it would seem like you would not get the best sound out of a tweeter if it was towards your feet and facing your legs down by the factory kick panel. Most custom installers who manufacture kickpods will angle them so the speaker does not point straight at your legs and feet, but more towards your head. I've always placed tweeters around the bottom of the window area, or a little higher if you have room. I've even seen some installs that use the windshield A-Pillar to place the tweeter higher. ------------- Squirrel

I have a high end component system and I mounted the tweeters in the A pillars that run up to my roof. They sound great and look great.

It all depends on where your woofers for the component set are... The closer you can get the tweeters on-axis with the woofer.. the better the imaging... For SQ, the closer you mount the tweeter to your ears, attenuation is nessesary. If you mount them in the A pillar you commonly want to attenuate them 2-4db or more (depending on the vehicle)... If you dont have an adjustment on the crossover, you can always add resistors in-line with the tweeters. If you do put the tweeters in the kick (and i don't reccomend it if the woofers aren't there beside them), at least angle mount them (the most common direction you want to aim the is towards the dome light in your headliner), and attenuate the woofer so you your tweeters aren't drowned out...

thanks guys for the advice.id like to put the tweeters in the a pillars of the doors but thats where the control lever is for the side mirrors.i thought about putting the tweets up above the window,but that would be too far away from the woofer.ill probably end up having to cut into the door

No, that would be best... The closer you have the tweeter on axis to the woofer the flatter your frequency response will be..

it really depends how low your soundstage is to begin with...sometimes mounting a tweeter in an A-pillar works really well to raise the soundstage up a bit, but do pay attention to the attenuation part, especially if you will be running a titanium tweeter...they can get very annoying and very discouraging very quickly when they are tearing at your ears because they arent properly attennuated...

- -put the mids in the kick panels, and aim them towards the B-pillar on the
- opposite side
- -put the tweets in the a-pillars, about 6" above the dash, firing straight
- across the car (directly at each other)
- -now, play with your crossover points and phase on each speaker to see what works best.
- I always find that putting one of the mids out of phase works very well to solidify you imaging, and it usually depends on the car as to which side to do this to.
- Also, you may have to play with the eq to get the imaging really good...sometimes peaks in the response can negativelyaffect the soundstage (especially in the low vocal ranges, around 160 hz)I've done this in many cars, and it always helps make the image solid and focused.

One thing I remember always seeing in the RF install manuals for their component systems is that they suggest mounting the tweeters either less than 2" from the woofers, or more than 7" from the woofers. Anywhere in between, at least for those speakers, causes destructive interference. Just something to think about--as if you don't already have enough info from everyone!  ------------- Ethan
