Id like to hear some other peoples opinions on what their favorite SQ decks are of all time...I have a few that, were I a multi-millionaire, would have to be part of my collection...and who knows, maybe one day I will have some of them...

in no particular order, they are:

McIntosh MX-406
Clarion 9255
Alpine 7909
Nak CD700
Sony C90 (also CDX 910)
Denon DCT Z1

these are all I can really think of at the moment, but feel free to post your favorite SQ decks...

Personally I think most Eclipse HU have exceptional SQ, once you go Eclipse you can never go back!

lol...sorry bberman, I had an Eclipse deck and am happier with my Clarion 9575...not saying Eclipse isnt great for SQ, but I just prefer my Clarion...

my buddy has a 45Z DYohn, and it is an excellent sounding deck...

and Jeff, I cant really argue with you there buddy, another fine Alpine product...I just wish I could get one at dealer cost, lol...

Im with you bberman, i have a new Eclipse CD5433 and i love it to death. I started out with a nice Panasonic on my setup but i didnt like the sq i was getting from it and figured i would have to get an eq to make it sound the way i wanted but with the Eclipse deck no eq is needed to make it sound good so.

I am an MP3 person. I don't think I can go back to the single cd on the wave format. Had a Pioneer DEH-P740MP, but now I have upgraded it to the DEH-P940MP. A little slow when it comes to getting the music started, but I enjoy it.

thepencil you run an mp3 deck as an SQ deck??? what components back up your system? I cant stand mp3 playback as it is so full of flaws and oddities...

sacrilege!!! lol...

and yes bberman, the world wouldnt be what it is today (not sure if thats good or bad, heh...) if we were all drones who were all of the same mind...diversity makes us stronger, and makes this board the most useful tool that it is...

MP3 is probably the only thing I would buy now. I run a Fosgate component set. A friend of mine gave me a copy of EZ Creator for compressing and copying music, ever since then I’ve never looked back. I’ve got the premium version of the software, which allows you to compress it at a higher quality. I usually do it at 256 and 320 bitrate and I hardly notice the subtle difference. From what I’ve read, I do know that you lose some sound quality when the format is compress, but supposedly the tech people say the sound that you lose are frequency that the human ears can’t hear.   I don’t like losing any sound on my music, but if they say I can’t hear it, it doesn’t bother me too much. posted_image

I’ve got to agree with you there Big Purds that mp3 HU still got a lot of work ahead of them before they get to perfection. They are still in the infancy stage of development right now, but give it a bit of time I am sure perfection is not too far of the distance. I personally like the list that you got there, but I can never justify the cost with the marginal benefits of getting one verse the practical gain of a mp3 player. The only way I would ever convince myself to getting one is that I get it at dealer cost. By the way, what do you own?

I have a Clarion 9575Z in my Datsun, and used to run an old Sony XRC-900 cassette deck to a Sony C1 changer (the flagship) in a few other cars long ago...the XRC900 is the tape equivalent to the CDX 910, straight preamp units, with great DAC processing...second in Sonys line only to the C90...

I remember when my tape deck retailed for almost $1000 Canadian...everyone said "Youre nuts, its a ****** tape deck!" but it was great for SQ, especially paired up with that C1...

but now I am running the 9575 and have been fairly happy with it...its got a very strong preamp and plays nice and clean...I am also running the DSP Clarion made for that deck (7500Z) and they are a good pair...

I missed a good deal on a 9255 in pristine condition a couple of months ago (recovering from christmas) and am still kicking myself about it...one day though!

i absolutley love me Pioneer DEH-P6400. it has alot of sound shaping features and the screen entertainment is great, also for a great price-$279 retail. i may be trading it in on a DEH-P6500 since it is just a redisgn of the p6400

In my car I had a Clarion 9675z; I replaced it with an Alpine CDA-7873 IMO the two don't compare. The Alpine sounds much better and is easier to work with. I have had the Pioneer DEH-P 640 and Alpine blows that unit away too. I can't see myself owning another makers HU.

I currently own an Alpine CDA-7894. This thing has great SQ, even with MP3s. I agree that audio compression has a ways to go yet, but for now, it doesn't get much better than this. Quality of your mp3s are really important. If you download 128kbps mp3s made by some guy in his basement who listens to all his music on his computer speakers, then ya, you are likely to have quality issues. But, if you make them yourself (I like 192kbps, for quality and size) after taking some time to do some reading and learning the various strengths/weaknesses, and how to tweak the encoders for maximum SQ, you end up with roughly 140 songs on one cd that sound 99% as good as the original. And a good quality system can make up for that missing 1%!! posted_image

I agree that the Clarion 9675 doesnt sound that great...they employed different DACs and such in the production of the 9675 as far as I know, and it really hurt SQ...

I am happy with the 9575 for now...like I said, it is a decent deck, with a strong preamp...

thanks Big Purds, I'm a big fan of the 8X oversampling and 20 bit D/A in the Nak decks.  Makes all CD's sound better! And I HATE the overblown faceplate light shows on a lot of modern decks!  Tha CD45z has none of that, just clean looks and clean sound.  If I had the extra bucks, I'd go for the MB series...

BTW, the CD45z replaced my Eclipse 55430 and there is NO comparison.  The Nakamichi blows it away.

one of the other great bonuses you get with a Nak deck is the mid control adjustment...it is so useful I dont really understand why so few manufacturers employ that into head unit design...its a great thing to have...

WHen looking for a MP3 HU you should definately go for the ones with VARIABLE BITE RATE playback.

This as u might have put together, records specific frequencies in different kbps. So high frequency notes will be recorded at a high bite rate than the lower frequencies, giving you the maximum amount of songs per disk while still giving you optimum quality.

Nak? Damn there are some serious disadvantages about being on the other side of the Atlantic for ive never even heard of that make! they are unknown to UK  posted_image

Nakamichi = Nak...

and you probably do have Nak if you look around...

the European market doesnt seem to have near as much Japanese products in it as we get over here...you guys have alot more of your own stuff over there...

Although I'm still far from having the $'s to get a new HU, any thoughts on the Alpine 7995, 9815, or 7998?

I have to admit, the 7990 is a very clean looking unit, but I can't justify $3000 for a headunit! That is of course anyone wants to front a loan posted_image

While we are on the topic of MP3 players.
I need a new head unit but I think I am going to opt out of the MP3 format. When I first started shopping for a new head unit I was shocked to find out that on most players you have to rifle through the numbered tracks to find the one you want.
I think manufacturers need to put more time into MP3 recievers and come with a good interface. They need to supply a display that you can scroll through the file names, I would say about ten files at a time. Finding a track in 160 files isnt easy work, by the time you do you are already at your destination.

Any thoughts

I guess I'm the first to endorse Kenwood.  I'm on my second Kenwood deck and I actually just got it today.  Its the KDC-MP922.

This deck sounds GREAT!  I actually run all Kenwood electronics in my CIvic, with RF subs and Sony speakers.  This deck has so many grea attributes, including Kenwood's new SRS WOW function, which really bumps up the SQ.  At $500 retail, its got to be one of the best bang or bump-for-the-buck deals out there.  I'm happy with it.

McIntosh would seriously kick ass. They've taken the sinfully precise accuracy of their home hi-fi and smooshed it into sexy lil' trunk (and dash) size packets. Survey sez...... TUBE AMPS!!!!!!!!!  Yeah buddy!!! But..... until i find that stray suitcase with a cool million in it i'll make do with my Clarion 9575z. Say, since were on SQ.... what about amps?  Whats the thoughts on Xtant? (I work for an MTX dealer and we can pick-and-piece Xtant stuff....thinking bout gettin one).

first of all, the Macs are Clarion decks...built by Clarion to Macs specs...the Mac MX406 and the Clarion 9255 are the same deck inside...they even look alot alike on the outside...

secondly, the 9575 isnt a bad deck at all...when my friend and I were conducting an audio experiment, we tried quickly interchanging my Clarion for his Nak 45Z and to be honest, there wasnt much of a difference...not that I could tell...I was quite happy that my deck had just as strong of preamp as his Nak...

and as far as Xtant amps go, they are fairly nice amps...I used a 302A once long ago and it sounded pretty nice in my car...however, I have had some problems with the X1001...like their inability to sustain a 1 ohm load (like they were claimed to) and how much they cost for what they are...but all in all, if you buy their class a/b amps, you wont be doing yourself any disservice...

take a peek at the Xtant Hex12 subs if you can pick and piece their stuff...they are a very nice sounding sub and they hit pretty hard too...I wouldnt be surprised to see over 150db in the right box...that is my goal right now with a pair of the Hex 12s...been playing with different boxes recently, but I have heard of a guy hitting 152 in a 3.5 cube ported box (for 2) tuned to 28Hz...we will see I guess...

if it doesnt do well, I guess I will hafta break out the Stroker18 again and go scare some more people posted_image

ok since oppinions are like a"" holes... im going for the oldschool PREMIER P1R ( CIRCA 1998)the p1r had the standard hi mid and bass or the professional mode .. god that deck was a pain but if u tweaked it right there wasnt anything that could outperform it in sq.. fully adjustable from 20 hz to 25000 with sweeps and phase that took a master mecp installer hours to perect.. IF ANY ONE HAS ONE IN GOOD SHAPE EMAIL ME BUMPNDANIGHT@YAHOO.COM

just like u said bump, opinions are like assh0les...

and there is a common opinion that the P1R can be far outperformed by many decks available to the market today...even Pioneers old ODR system had superior SQ, as well as Sonys XES and Clarions ADCS system...

the P1R was a nice deck, but I dont think it ranks in my top 10 even as far as SQ goes...
