Hi everyone. I'm new here and let me tell you, I HAD NO CLUE THERE WAS THIS MUCH TO CAR AUDIO! I'm amazed and entranced by all the minute technical details of a perfectly tuned and balanced system. I have been installing systems for some of my friends for about half a year but I now know I was doing it blindly. I used to just find a speaker I thought sounded good and threw it in the stock speaker's place with what I though were fairly good results. I'm very interested in increasing my knowledge of car audio, plus I have a new car that I'm looking to put a system into. I'm on a budget and I already have a couple components and I need some professional advice. First of all the car is a 95' pontiac trans am. The stock mounts are in the kick panels and the trim panels, next to the seats in the back. They are both 6.5in round mounts. The components I have now are a pair of Boston Fx3, 3.5in two ways(12-60 per channel/100-20kHz/4ohm/92db), a pair of Infinity 6953i 6x9 three ways(100w Rms 300w peak/51-21kHz/4ohm/92db), a Pioneer GM-X362 bridgable, two channel amp(80w X 2, 200w X 1 max), A Koiler ??? bridgable, two channel amp reated at 600w max... I think, and finally a Kicker comp series C12 sub(150w max/88.5db/27-1000Hz). That's it. Any comments on how I should set up a cheap but quality system as well as what other components I need and where to get them would be great. Thanks again for your help. Brandon

You certainly came to the right place if you're interested in learning more. You'd be surprised at how much you will learn simply by logging on once a day and browsing the posts. As you can probably tell as well the12volt.com has a lot of good basic info as well (all accessible through the left-side menu). You might want to consider putting in an aftermarket head unit, although it's not necessary it will usually give you much better sound quality overall. As for the speakers, I think it'd be possible to make the bostons fit but the 6x9s are gonna be tough to squeeze in there, and even then you'd be looking at a lot of cutting your car apart. I'd have to look into the sizing and speaker locations a lil more before i could give you a definite answer or suggestion regarding the speakers. So bear with me... ------------- Ethan

My brother happens to have a 95 Z28 with the same setup of speakers (6.5's in the doors and behind the seats). It would take a lot work to get 6.x9's to sit properly in that type of car. So my advice would be to use a speaker size to match the factory as close as possible. For example my brother is running a Pioneer Deh-8500 to Pioneer Separates (don't know which model) the 6.5 mid bass in his doors and Pioneer 2 ways in the rear. And MTX thunder form 10 inch in the factory sub location (the car previously had the factory bose system in it-which was a pain to remove). running off the sup output of the head unit. That's just my opinion. But You definetly have come to the right place to get info on car audio.

Hey guys, It's me again. I wasn't actaully thinking about using my speakers in the stock mounts. I was actually think about getting a high power head unit w/ two output RCA sets. I would connect the stock kickpanel speakers to two of the cannels and then split the other two channels of the unit to the rear stock speakers and my 3 1/2's which I want to mount in the dash, then using the stuff I already had, I build a box to custom fit the hatch of my car and power it with the 200w amp. Last, I was thinking about using the other output to connect to the 600w amp and then to the two 6x9's in boxes which will sit where the sub box is. With this system all I have to buy is a head unit. I don't know which one to buy though.

Welcome to the12volt. Bit of advice to begin with, listen closely to bberman1, esmith69, and wvsquirrel. Those guys really know their stuff.
What's your budget for a head unit? A lot of my friends use either Alpine or Kenwood. I personally have a mid range Panasonic which I like, but would appreciate something a little higher end.
