need 6x9 speaker advice!

I am fairly new to all of this, so please forgive any ignorance I may exhibit. Although, I do understand some of the tech taIk I am behind the ball on almost everything and am in need of some good advice for a pair of solid, but cost concious 6x9 speakers to replace a pair of Alpine SPS-6939S that I am disappointed in. Anybody want'em for a great price, I'll make ya  a great deal. Probably most of you aren't married with kids and thus aren't limited on funds, but for one time a year (Father's Day/Birthday) I get to spend more than what a coke costs in the vending machines, so I have decided to upgrade. I drive a 96 Accord and am running a Pioneer Premier DEH-550MP MP3 CD Player (It's awesome for those of you in need), JBL GTO 635's up front and like I said a pair of Alpine SPS-6939S's in the back. No AMP! For those of you out there that can't understand how that can happen, I do accept donations so that I can purchase one. Anyway, I would like some reccomendations from you experts out there at what will give me the best bang for my buck. I've heard all the basic stuff, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Polk, Infinity and Fosgate, but have no clue about newbies like Audiobahn. I'm looking for a very efficient speaker (remember...no amp), delivers good bass, (I know I need a sub, but if I can't afford an amp.......), and won't kill me with harsh highs.

I have been buying subs for a while and amps also but still a rookie when it comes to the car audio scene.  But if you are just getting started any top brands like jl audio, kicker, fosgate all have entry level or older model woofers that are fairly cheap.  If you are in need for some good but not loud bass go with one of them..  Probably tens if you really dont have the cash.  Like I have learned in this forum you get what  you pay for.  But shop around you could get an amp for about 70 to 100 buks to push some entry level 10's.  But just make sure its not pyle or pyramid pretty much the same  all crap.  Remeber just a newbie trying to give a little advice.

Chase already covered about the best advice you can get.  And like Tom said, you do get what you pay for.  Now for my two cents.  Just about everyone on this board rants about MB Quart speakers.  Problem is I'm not sure if they make a 6x9.  Beyond that, I can say to stay away from Pioneer speakers - the bass response is next to nothing on mine.  Of those brands you mentioned, I personally like Kenwood, Alpine, and Infinity.  I hear good things about Fosgate and Polk, but nobody around here deals with them so I can't make a recco.  And stay away from Sony as well.
One bit that may intrigue you is Infinity's lineup uses what they call PlusOne.  They claim the cone is 30% larger, which moves more air and thus, greater bass.  Take a listen on some Infinities and see if you like.

By the way, I agree.  The Premier series are among my favorite HUs.  I'm probably gonna pick one of them up later this summer.

Well,  you've already been given some good advice (trust me, you have come to the right place) but let me I'll put my 2 cents in as well.  The best thing to do, in my opinion, is like what chase said- Go to a shop in your area or even places like Circuit city or Goodguys and listen to every speaker they have connected to a head unit.  Also listen to the same speakers through different head units as well (different head units produce different qualities of sound).  If one set of speakers sound good to you once you've heard them thru several different head units then you probably will be happy with them in your car.  But you should also keep in my mind that those speakers they have on display are running through amps.  But your Pioneer Premier head unit does use MOSFET technology in the internal to put out a pretty good wallop (my brother has the Pioneer DEH-8500MP in his 95 Camaro Z28 and is pushing 2 sets of separates and a sub off the head units internal amp.  That's a total of 9 speakers. 4 mids, 4 tweets, and a 10 inch MTX sub) So it's quite possible that what you hear in the store is what you'll hear in your car.   As far as recommendations you will want to avoid Sony  they are more show than go.  You could get a good set of Infinity's (which are as much go as they are show) for under 120 bucks.  Polk audio, also makes a good product as well.  Their composite line is pretty comparable to some of the higher end stuff. You might also want to check Sound Domain.com 's website because they not only have a large variety of product brands for sale, but they also have reviews from people who use the products they sell.    Hope that helps you out.

Thank you all for your responses, especially for the advise on the Pioneer and Sony speakers. I was highly considering them. I like the Infinity's and the JBL's, basically the same speaker, but the Audiobahn speakers (I've never heard them and no place around here sells them) appear to be an incredible buy because of the specs. I especially like the 95db sensitivity. Does anyone have an opinion on Audiobahn?
