I was given a Orion xtr1000 amp. everytime I hook a 12"sub to it, it keeps blowing them.1st time was a audiobahn aw1200q,2nd was a pioneer ts-w305dvc.I wired them in parallel, for 2ohms.The manual for the orion, says is stable to 1 ohm. What gives? please note,I didnt have the gains all the way up , just halfway also, the 12's are in a sealed box ,with it half full of fiberfill. thanks for any advice  :)

it was a single sub, facing the rear of the trunk I was trying to get it to hit ,but not trying to distort it...If that what you were asking...

where you doing crossover on/off or high/low pass filter push-button-type-action while the power was on?

this can be fatalto a speaker, depending on the condition of the switches (MAY send a voltage surge to the speaker...) always do while the power is off!

just a thought

"something smells funny" about that free amp you got... can you have it looked at, or keep your eyes out for a good used one? (we have something called the want-advertiser in my neck of the woods... loaded with people almost giving stuff away...).

Might be cheaper than another sub, if ya know what I mean.

How loud was it playing when you started to smell it?  And what's the status of it now?  Does it just not play anymore?  What about the amp, do any of its protection lights turn on?

if they were new subs and you were playin them at full power right off......... might have something to do with it

Where do you live? was your car out in the sun before you turned it on? how hot does it get in your trunk? your voice coil might have been over heated and playing it could have pushed it over the edge

phredman, If you smelled an electrical burn and your amp did not go into protection your subs over heated.  There could be many factors that could cause this to happen.  Orion amps are very under rated in some cases.  If you remove your sub from the box and it smells like it burnt than you are either over powering your sub or sending massive amounts of distortion to it.  But since you said the amp is turned down it is possible that you are over powering the subs.  The easiest way to resolve this is to get a sub that handles more power or upgrade to a dual sub system.

Another reason that your sub could have burnt out is because of the break in period.  Most subs require hours of play at above average levels but not to be pushed to the max for hours before they actually achieve there best performance.  Can't answer why is this but after talking to varoius sub makers this seems to be a reality.

Hope that this helps
