In laymen's terms...a crossover allows you to adjust the frequencies or cutoff certain frequencies going to your speakers. For a pair of component door speakers you may want only certain freq's to pass thru to your mid bass speaker and only certain freq's to pass thru to your tweeters. A crossover will allow you to set those freq's. You can install Bass blockers, which is considered a "Passive Crossover" inline with your speakers, but they are generally only good for cutting off certain freq's like 200Hz (Bass) or lower and are not adjustable. An active crossover, I believe, is adjustable to some degree.

For large systems in which you have incorporated component speakers and subs, you may want to and probably should include an active crossover network, but for smaller system's you may opt to instead place Bass Blockers inline with your speakers.

I would recommend atleast, while you are in the installation phase to go ahead and purchase a pair of Bass Blockers and install them inline with your front door speakers, unless of course you have a component set up and then I would recommend a pair of active crossovers, which may be already included with them. They are easy to install so don't be intimidated.

Definitely go with the crossovers man.  Bass blockers are only like a dollar at radioshack but they give the speakers a harsh sound.  Also it almost never fails that you can't find the one blocker that filters the sound just the way you want it.  Go ahead and spend the money for crossovers, it's worth it.
