Well as some of you may know I'm slowly, but surely building up my first audio system, in my first car.  I have a Panasonic 903u deck, a pair of 6.5 type r components in the door and kicker 5.25's in the rear shelf.  Now I'm left with building the deep bass.  I had a few thoughts on this but still am unsure what I want/need since I have had no previous experience.

I was thinking about 2 - 8inch subs and a 12, or I was thinking 2 - 12 inch.  I want some balance to my car and I thought maybe the 2 8's could provide some low bass, but the single twelve could hit the very low notes.  Or is it better to go with just 2 12's.  I have a very limited amount of space.

I'm looking for loudness, I do not need GREAT sq but I don't want anything sounding like crap.  What would you suggest?

A simple rule of thumb when installing subs...keep them all the same size, as you can actually loose cerain sounds if you have different size subs running, cause an 8 and a 12 create different size waves and at certain frequencys those waves ill match and creat tones that are louder than normal and sometimes cancel eachother out creating low level tones....In general will not sound good.

Would 10's be big enough to hit the low notes though?  I want speakers that can shake the car when needed, and if 10's can do that then I would defintally look into that.

I don't make alot of money fast, but I have no problem waiting and saving up if buying more expensive things is the way to go.

And I just measured my cars trunk area. 36inch x 13inch x 24 inch (w x h x d)  And I don't car if my box takes up every last space I got.

In my opinion,
Stay away from the 8's, I've done it before and I wasnt happy. Over the years I have learn't that 2-12's are the way to go.

Oh i run two american pro 8" subs in a ported box in my ma's car-space reasons...they do ok to get the bass outta a song...but they dont like to move much air...like the air that you can feel. If ya got the room two 12's would be the way...I have series 1 rockfords...at 100w rms..tuned right..they hit dam good.

Well I have never made a box before so I probably couldn't build anything really special, What do you guys think about a box like this:

https://cgi.ebay.com/dll?ViewItem&item=3041909406&category=14945

Are these guysfull of it, or is that a really nice box.  I will have to do some re-measuring to see if 15inches tall can fit, I just took a quick look with a yard stick last time so maybe this box could fit.

Sorry for asking all these silly questions (hey I'm new!) but I might as well ask now since your already online.

I noticed that there seems to be quite a big gap in price between the ported and sealed enclosures.  Is it worth almost doubling the cost for the slor ported box, is it really THAT big of a difference? I'm pretty much looking at the dual 10 inch options and $150 to $80 is a very large gap.

ya total difference.

Vented is for boomy bass while the sealed is for tight bass-like a bass drum..sharp.. also sealed take more power to get the same effect outta a vented

I have one Rockford fosgate HE2 sub in my trunk and it pounded and shook the car until I had problem with my battery and had to unhook it.  So if you have a smaller car, go with one powerful sub.

Sorry for bringing back yesturday's thread but I still have a few questions and  this thread is already about me and my growing system.  I've pretty much decided on 2 10's to place in the subzone slot ported box.  I've pretty much decided on a JBL BP600.1 or BP1200.1 (I'll figure that out for myself later)  But now I'm stuck.  I've been reffered to Comp VR's, Punch HX2's, and Alpine Type-R's for subs.  I listen to mostly hip hop/rap but soemtimes I bust out some old love songs for kicks.  What would you suggest our of these choices, or add a new choice for me.  If you could please give me a run down at which subs exel in which catigories

Any help?

out of those 3 subs the Alpines are probably the nicest IMO...they are fairly loud and sound somewhat decent...the Rockfords are poor at both overall, and the compVRs were once a nice sub but Kicker has decided that they wanted to revamp the compVR and now it doesnt sound near as nice or seem to perform as well...

give me a price range fpr the subs and I will make some suggestions...also, what car, what year, and what is your overall budget (including wiring, alternator if necessary, etc etc...)

I have a 1987 Nissan Pulsar.  Very small car.  The trunk is really just part of the the interior, it doesn't get blocked by the rear seats.  I can get to it and see it from the front seats, if this makes any sense to you.  Between the subs and the amp (including wiring) I really do not want to spend over 550 on.  If I must I suppose I could always save up.

I have to disagree with you Big Purds. I run (2) 12" Punch HX2's fed apx. 500 watts each from a Power 1000bd, and they aren't poor at SQ or SPL by any means. I know RF isn't the "best of the best" for either, but the HX2 series (Punch or Power) is by no means "poor overall". I've always taken your advice since you are one of the heavy hitters here, but I've got to disagree with you on this one posted_image

BTW, nice choice on the amp series troysnx. The JBL BP series is a solid choice for price and performance.

I just looked at that link provided for ebay...

I think that any of the senior members here or the more knowledgable members should take a look at the claims made by this box builder, because I have spent the last 5 or 10 mins either laughing in hysterics or marvelling in awe at the outrageousness of the claims made...we should all buy a box from him and demand our money back...

Ok guys, head unit and Alpine Type R 6.5's came in today.  A blown fuse, cut fingers, and many sweaty hours later I managed to fully install the head unti.  Woo!  But then I go to my Component speakers and find out the drivers magnet is huge, and will not fit in my doors.  :(  Damn.  I was thinking I could go search and maybe just buy some mini sub like boxes and thorugh them behind the drivers and passanger seats.  But that would put almost all of my music comign from behind me, I dunno if thats bad or good.

But anyway any suggestions at all will be very helpful!

Get some mounting rings, or make some....factory speaker locations are usually the best place to keep the speaker, Japanese cars especially take special care in finding a good place to create a good sound stage. I had the same problem when i had those speakers...I cut a bigger hole in my doors and suffered by not being able to open the windows the whole way, then ended up using rings myself

hmm....I'm gonna need atleast a 1 inch, possible one and a quarter, rings.  Is that too much?  I'm assuming you find these at basically any audio car store, how much do they run for?

I would make- or have someone thats skilled with wood working make the rings...then have the edges round down...then you get some gloss spray paint and spray paint them to match.  about 4 to 6 coats...sanding with fine grit paper in between.

I dunno about premade rings tho...they could have them????

if you are going with 10's. get your money out of the L5's & mmats are the best out there for the money. in that car if it is powered right you will only need 1.as for the amp remember power costs money about 50 cents a watt. thats real power not what it will do for a split sec.
