What gauge should the turn on lead be coming from the head unit to the amp for the best performance?

dream it, build it, fiberglass it

18 gauge should be fine.  It just needs a signal to tell it to turn on

I would say between 14-16 guage. That should be plenty, you'll probably be able to get away with 18 guage.

I use 16 ga. Mainly because its what I have always used, but 18ga will work just fine. I wouldnt go any smaller than 18ga, and I definately wouldnt go any bigger than 16ga. Anything bigger than 16 will just be overkill, and quite frankly a waste of money.
