I installed a new Kenwood CD player and 4 speakers in my Hyundai about 6 months ago.  All was fine for about 3 months. All of a sudden my AM reception went to crap. Lots of static and when I use the wipers or directionals it gets intermittently better and worse. If I touch the antenna it gets louder and weaker. The only change to the car since the installation was a tuneup. Could the use of inferior plugs and wires cause this? Does anyone have an idea what happened here and how do I rectify it?

Sounds like you've lost a ground connection in the antennea somewhere.  The tune-up could have caused it if they knocked something loose.  Not likely to be the result of inferior plugs, etc unless you can hear the engine whine in the stereo...
