Hi,

I am about to install a 4 channel amp to drive my front and rear speakers.

My head unit has pre outs for the front and rear channels so no problems so far!

My concern is what happens to the head units internal amp. There seems to be no way of switching it off. Does the fact that I will have RCA leads connected tell it not to power up? I believe that if you run an amp with no speakers connected it will be damaged.

Does somebody have an answer for me please.

Thanks

Your head unit amp will not be damaged.  I suggest the only thing you need to do, if there are speaker wires connected to the internal amp, is insulate them so they cannot short out to each other or to the car (use some electricial tape or wire nuts.)

Cheers.

Thanks DYohn,

I'll just pull the speakers plug from my head unit which should do the job then.

You have a different plugs for your power wires and your speaker wires?

Sure do. I have two plugs on 2 leads from the back of the unit. One is the powergroup, the other for the front and rear speakers.

Either disconnect the plug for the internal amp on the radio, or tape the leads up real good so they don't short to anything. Not hooking them up will not damage the unit.
