No sound until acc. then start

This is going to sound weird, but hopefully an easy fix. Just installed a new JVC Kameleon KD-LX111 in my 96 Grand prix. I used a wire harness adapter and found a wiring diagram to the Grand Prix. All wires seem to match up fine. My problem is when I start the car, the stereo illuminates and all power functions work fine, except there is no sound. However if I turn the key to accessary, the sound is there and not only that when I turn the key from accessary to start, the sound is still there and everything works fine.

I'm not sure if this is an install problem, or a stereo defect. I double checked the connections, and thought I had the yellow constant mixed up with the red switched, I even switched the two and there was no sound in either position.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

That is correct. CruisinS&S mentions not to connect anything to the orange wire. Well I do have it connected to the illumination lead. Does it not need this? This is a orange wire w/white stripe coming off the stereo and solid orange off the harness adapter.

This is an odd one.  It sounds like your hookup is OK, but there is obviously some problem in the car.  It is really hard to tell without being able to do some hands-on tests...  The dimmer/illumination feeds may or may cause a problem in some decks, but it doesn't hurt to start there.  Disconnect the orange wire.  Try it and see.  Then, If the problem still exists, temporarily connect constant power (probably yellow) directly to the battery.  Run a temporary 16 gage wire just for the test.  Be sure the fuse that comes with the deck is good and is used.  This will bypass any strange things happening in yur car's 12V main power circuit.   Connect the ground for the deck directly to the chassis, not to the car's wiring harness.  See if the problem remains.  If it does, there is something wrong in your switched power (which is what I suspect.)  If this is the case, the easy way to "fix" it is to connect both the main power and the switched power to your car's main supply.  The down side is you will have to use the head unit's power switch to shut off the stereo as it will not depend on the key at all.  The harder, correct fix is to troubleshoot the car's electrical system and see why the switched power lead is not being activated by the key in "run", but that is something beyond the scope of this forum and will require someone familiar with that car's electrical system.

I will definatly start with disconnecting orange, however I will not be able to start the tests till tomorrow night. If that does not work, I'll try the remaining options that DYohn has mentioned. I'll post my results.

Well CruisinS&S was right on! I didn't get a chance to pull this apart till today. But the first thing I tried, worked. I disconnected the orange wire of the harness adapter, and what do you know, everything still worked and it fixed my problem.
