I recently saw an episode of Monster House and they installed a CD receiver in the headboard of this guys' bed. I don't want to do anything quite as lame, however, I do want to hook up a stereo to run off of regular house current. I have a really cool, old, wooden radio shell that I would like to make work by stuffing a car receiver in it. I've seen AC to DC converters, but the ones I've seen available can only put out 3 or 5 AMPS. My question is, how many total AMPS does a typical car receiver put out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I thought I would need a converter, I'm just wondering what the typical AMP output is on a car stereo. The converters I've seen so far can only handle 3 or 5 AMPS.

The typical receiver puts out a maximum of 10 amps or so. You should be able to tell the maximum amperage by a fuse thats on the back of the deck. Whatever the amp is rated at is the maximum amperage. I would assume that it could possibly run around 7 amps, but i have never tried to hook anything up AC to DC.

Well there are several ways you can do that. You can either use the AC to DC converter, but you want to make sure you get one that can put out about 15 Amps RMS. I would suggest going on google and typing in "AC to DC Converters 15 AMPS"... You should find some reasonably priced stuff there. IF you wanted something a little more involved. I would suggest trying something like what most car audio stores use. They will usually take a few optima yellowtops(one would be much more then enough for your idea) and hooking it up to a battery charger. You might be able to get away with a 12volt lantern battery and using a battery conditioner to it. If you want some help with these ideas go ahead and PM me. Lates, --mindctrl

Thanks for all the help. It never even dawned on me that places like Best Buy or Circuit City all have their stereos working on display. Duh. I guess I should snoop around some car audio shops to see what kind of set up they have. Thanks again.
