hey guys, i have a memphis mc1000d amp, audiobahn awt15x sub, a 1997 dodge neon, with a 85 amp alternator, and a yellow top battery, do you think i will need to get another alternator, or will the stock one be fine, also, if i hook a alpine mrv-1507 amp up at a 1 ohm load, do you think it will handle it?

well i would not get an extra alt, but you could and probly should get a HO alt. (high output) 150 amps would work well. you would have plenty for your amp, and plenty for your cars accs. a/c, lights, power windows, power seats, rear window defrost, etc, etc......... you can't have to much power.

1100 watts takes approximately 85 amps itself. so yes, i think you should get another alt. at least 150, perferably 200 amps, just to cover yourself.

That is basically the maximum the amp will drain. How often is it that your amp is going to constantly draw 85amps? Not much. But yes if your having problems with lights dimming. But if your going to hook that alpine up as a second amp i would definitely look into getting a high output alt.

Yeah same affect. He will recoil it for you. You'd be best getting a new until though. On the subject of caps, mainly just for should. So you really shouldn't have to worry about it. They will just stress your electrical system even more.

97Neon I would stay away from most garages rewind alternators...typically they dont get rebuilt completely, alot of the old parts get reused, and they tend to induce a ton of extra noise into the system...

and for the price you are being quoted, I would really question the claim on output as well...

one thing you should always ask when purchasing an alternator from anyone, is what speed will your motor have to be running in order to put out enough amperage to cover your needs...most reputable alternator builders will have their alternators put out hefty amounts of current at idle, so you dont have to sit and rev the hell out of your motor at each and every light you come to just so your car doesnt stall...in the typical garage rewind, they are hard pressed to put out the claimed amperage at redline, let alone at idle...

your alternator is the heart of your electrical system...dont be cheap there...do it right and do it once...
