I have two holes where there used to be two 6x9.  I would like to go back with a component speaker set but already have these oval shaped holes for the 6x9s.  Any suggestions for a component set that will fill up that opening?  Obviously I will mount the tweeter someplace else.

Depending on the depth behind the hole, you could go with almost any 6, 6.5, 6 3/4 component set. You would have to make an adapter or get an adapter so you can mount the speaker properly.  What kind of car do you plan on doing this with?  And are these speakers in the front or the back.  If they're in the back,  just go with a good set of coaxials and run a matching set of components up front.  You may want to look into a set from MB Quart's Discus line but you will need a good quaility amp to properly power them.

What i do is, trace the 6x9 onto a piece of 1/4" wood, cut it out, and place it over the hole for the 6x9, screw it in and check the fit.  once that step is worked out, take it back off, trace the hole for your speaker and cut it out, , now you can mount any sized speaker from 3.5" up to a 5x7.  And leave some room so you can mount the tweeter on the same piece of wood.
