I plan to place the port on the box im building on the front baffle toward the bottom to the extreme right  of the driver. My question is  can the port end that is in the box face any direction.

I've only been around a few ported boxes but....what type of box are you building (i know ported), what sub and a little more info may help. there is a difference in a ported box and an SPL ported box.

its a focal 33k  that was in a  sealed box (wrong type of enclosure as per manufactuer)  so im maling the right type now. the port will go  into the box  up 90 deg then toward the front again to have the right clearence around the port.
