Unfortunately they have discontinued their ES line.  It really is too bad as that stuff really rocked.  You can buy some of their old models on E-bay though.

Which eq were you wanting to know about?  I know of one site that has absolutely everything you wanted to know about the XDP-4000X, and a lot of info on the 210EQ, C90 and C910 head units.  This includes the service manuals for each.  Here's the link: https://www.matronics.com/xdp4000x-list

My friend bought a car that had a sony-es HU in it.  Its pretty bare bones, should he keep it or get a new one, ive always heard older sony stuff is good, but I wasnt sure if thats true for HUs as well.  We also have a es hu in one of the trucks at work.

Thank you much again Steven. I was looking for the XDP-210eq. Someone yesterday posted that thier sister gave them this model but wasnt sure if they could use it or not. Someone else chimed in and mentioned somthing about the combatibillaty since it was digital or somthing like that. I havent heard of such an animal so was wanting to look into it. Thanks again for the link. Pimp......I prefer the older Sony ES line over anything X-plode but thats just my opinion. They all had 8 volt pre-outs and were very ergonomical or easy to use. Tell your friend if he likes the sound to hang on to it.

Wow, 8 volts! The Hu in my buddys car is in really good condition, except for one strange problem. If you turn the volume past 25 all the speakers start crackling, on some songs it distorts at a lower vol.

Actually I believe even the top ES head units only had 4 volt outputs.  But they were built with quality in mind.  The 910 was out for a long time and was probably used in over half the competition cars in it's time.  The C90, which replaced the 910, was just as good.  They were one of the best head units ever made IMO (becides their XES units that went for $8k).

The 210EQ processor has to be used with a Sony head unit featuring the Unilink system.  It isn't because it's digital as you can use it analog as well.  It's because of the bus system they used.  Their processors were incredible, up to par with Pioneers ODR stuff.  The only drawback IMO is that you had to use it with a Sony head unit.  But then who else has 72 dB per octave digital slopes to play with like is in my 4000X processor?  The Sony stuff was incredible.  It's too bad they decided to cheapen up their stuff so much and drop the higher end line.

It could be the speakers.  Do you know which model number the head unit is?

Sorry my bad , I stand corrected about the pre-out. After double checking it was indeed a 4 volt output. Anyway , I wish at the time I had access to the 210 EQ. It sounded like somthing ahead of its time.  You said a 72 db slope? Thats pretty incredible. I have an Alpine passive EQ BBE that has a 14 db cut and boost which I really like. Isnt the normal around 10 or 12 db?

Its not the speakers themselves, we switched out speakers and it still does it. He is going to get a new wiring harness for it, whoever put the hu in hacked off the harness, although its actually done pretty neat, its not a mess of wires going every way like some ive seen.
