My friend recently asked me to help her build a system, so we began shopping for head units.  Her '98 Toyota 4Runner has a stock double DIN head unit.  Do we need to replace this with another double DIN hu or is there a way to install the standard size hu in the space?  If it is necessary to find a double DIN head unit, does anybody have recommendations?

no a single DIN can be used, you will just need a toyota pocket (its a dash kit, its like $20 dollars) and you can put like cd cases or the remote control in it..... also DONT CUT THE HARNESS when they ask do you need the wire harness, SAY YES

Metra also has a din pocket that will mount right to the factory brackets.

Thanks daze, not that you mention it, i remember seeing these little "pockets" in some of my other friend's japanese cars.  But why do you say not to cut the harness?  I might do this install job myself (i've installed several amp kits, amps, drivers, and a car alarm) so are you talking about the factory harness?  I had planned on just buying a harness kit instead of taking the time to splice all the corresponding wires individually.

now that you mention it*   sorry about that little typo.  I don't want to make it sound rude (like "no thanks to you")  I appreciate your help.
