The place i worked at closed down, and for the mean time i set up a home shop to keep funds comming in, but now an owner from another shop is looking for me to work for him, but the problem is there main line is Clarion, and i just can't stand the stuff because everyone in town thinks its just the cats meow. Should i just suck it up and install the stuff? Is anyone in the same situation as me? I keep thinking this kind of thing may make me dislike the finished installs i do. ------------- 2003 Chevy Avalanche,Eclipse CD7000,Morel Elate 5,Adire Extremis,Alpine PDX-4.150, 15" TC-3000, 2 Alpine PDX-1.1000, 470Amp HO Alt.

This situation is purely opinion based I think. If I were you I would pick this job for a couple of reasons. 1. the income. swallow your pride with the gear. 2. You now have another reference to use in the future. Your ability to do good work is not judged based upon the product, I don't think. I agree that bad product is sort of disappointing to look at, but its not your car! -------------

Like Dwarren said, plus u dont lose out on income and u can always look around for a company that u would rather work for at the same time.

Do I need to smack you upside the head, take the job. Clarion is a tool and that is all. Use the tool for it's intended job. If you are the installer, you are paid to install. It is the customers choice of which brand to use. Maybe the shop will grow and soon you will have different tools to use or maybe you will find a different shop with tools more associated to what you like. Don't pass up a job opportunity dude. How can you save for that nice Eclipse cd player.......

Im sure they have more than just Clarion. As long as money is coming in and your doing installs, it really cant be that bad. Just suggest that Alpine(or other brands that you have interest in) should be carried there, its not like it is a Clarion Manu. or shop. Are there any other good shops around you?

Hey, there is nothing wrong with Clarion. They make some really good gear - in fact they used to make some of the best head units on the market, they just called them McIntosh. I've listened to a lot of Clarion Pro Audio gear and have never been disapointed in the performance for the price. But like most companies, they also make some real trash at the low end. And hey, if they sell Sony then you can be assured you will always have repeat business when customers come back for warranty repairs and to buy better gear! Like everyone else has said Alpine Guy, a job is a job and worrying about brands is a silly reason not to take one. As long as you do your best and are a professional and do professional work, the brand name on the box means nothing and is the choice of the customer. ------------- Support the12volt.com

As a business man myself (work FT, but work on the side..) I can't understand why your priority is saving up for new gear.
All my stuff is extreemly cheap or free. I don't run the most impressive sound systems in my own vehicles. If anyones asks, I just tell them I'm getting another vehicle or I sold some stuff to finish an install. I don't have the time to install my own stuff, all of this is true!
I just bought a new truck with a free Clarion, I found it was missing the ACC. I am so cheap, I didn't even buy the harness. I picked up a free paper clip and switched the brown TEL wire to the ACC position. I'm glad I thought of this, becasue I didn't want to spend hundreds on a CD player. This one works fine.
I'm leaving a Kenwood in my old car, I got that for free after doing an install for a friend.
When it comes to business, you need to make money with your tools and I doubt a stereo that you need to 'save up for' is going to help your business much.
I give you credit for trying to work on your own, but running a business might not be your strong point. You must be a good installer, otherwise this guy wouldn't be interested in you. Take the job, do what you do best and leave the business up to this guy!

I'd take the job you gotta pay the bills.. And I think you made the most valid point with your first post:
"but the problem is there main line is Clarion"
THEIR line is clarion. Not yours. If/when you open a shop feel free to carry whatever lines you like. Until then, if your applying to be an installer, install! Good luck,
Mike

Does Clarion sell a lot of non headunit stuff. I have never really seen a lot of systems that run Clarion subs/speakers/amps. But for that matter I really havent seen many Clarion HUs around here either. The cats-meow around here as far as HUs go is primarily Pioneer.

Yeah i'll deal with installing it, , i'll just feel bad at the end of the day when i think about how i sold that poor kid a clarion system haha, ,oh whell, ,at least my magical fingers will do there best to make it sound as good as possible. Thats my job rite. Im actually sorta excited, i would like to work for these guys because they treat there installers like the mad scientists that we are,,,at my old place i was the bum mechanic that got paid 2 times as much as the other employees. I'll let you guys know if i land the job or not. ------------- 2003 Chevy Avalanche,Eclipse CD7000,Morel Elate 5,Adire Extremis,Alpine PDX-4.150, 15" TC-3000, 2 Alpine PDX-1.1000, 470Amp HO Alt.

Hey Alpine Guy, If the shop you were at went under, it would stand to reason Alpine will be looking for a new indipendent dealer in your area. Tell your new boss how much you liked installing that gear and all the happy and MONEY MAKING customers your old shop had. Also make sure to tell him how reliable and hassell free the Alpine stuff is. When the Reps come a callin' at my door this is the first thing I ask them. Good luck on your new job, there's always a shop looking for a quality installer. Bob

There is nothing wrong with clarion, just nothing really flashy. They do make more then just decks. I like their older video stuff. Who knows, you may talk the owner into picking up other brands that your old store carried, seeing as how it closed.
So suck it up and take the job if you need the money.
