I installed a really cheap Road Gear stereo in my girl's Nova and when she cuts the head lights on, the stereo turns off. I asked around and it turns out that this problem existed with the previous owner's installation of a panasonic tape player(which has gone out). What's the deal here?

You are probably baddly grounded make sure the ground wire is well attached to the body (bared metal) Make sure the parking light are not connected to the ground wire of the radio

Check your wiring with a multimeter dude!  You got a wire hooked up wrong somewhere, so just check everything.

It sounds like your park light wire (from the vehicle) is being used as a ground for your radio. Find the black wire from your radio, disconnect it from the wire that is connected to it and ground it straight to the chassi of the car. This is the first and easiest thing you should try.

I forgot to mention the fact that if you dim the lights the radio works, but there's alot of static and it makes the CDs skip.

The ground wire of the stereo is definately hooked up to the dash light wire.  Cut it and ground it to a bare metal surfuce.  (stereo end)  Tape off the car end.

The ground in the wiring is whacked man.  Just run a new one.  Cut the ground wire from the deck where you spliced it in at the factory wiring.  Than find a factory ground screw or a piece of the body that metal, scrape the paint off, and conenct it there..that should fix your problem, bub.  If it doesn't post again and I or another person will repsond with a possible solution........DJ12V

THere is nothing to find out.  Your ground wire is definately hooked up to the dash lights wire.  You need to cut it and ground the stereo directly to metal!
