Well, today was Judgement Day...I'd bought a 170A alternator for my 2001 Civic from the much-maligned "Alterstart" outfit. It was of course after my purchase ($299 USD) that I began to here the horror stories of faulty components and brutal customer service.

The alternator was to produce 75-80 amps at idle and 170 amps at full output. During the install, I upgraded to 1/0 gauge wire and fused the alternator to battery line in an effort to avoid any electrical catastrophes. The mechanics doing the install didn't have too much experience upgrading alternators (especially wiring); it ended up taking them much longer than expected.

Drumroll, please...The results: 110 amps at idle @ 14.54 volts and 180 amps at 1800 RPMs @ 14.54 volts. As of yet, nothing has caught fire while driving and the alternator appears to be working better than advertised.

This post is just to let people know of my experience with this company and their product. I'm not trying to sing the praises of Alterstart; it's obvious that if you get a faulty or damaged alternator from these guys, you're screwed and will likely be punched in the ovaries. I'm just breathing a sigh of relief (for now) that I haven't fallen victim to the Alterstart Curse!!!

And I bought the last 15" Brahma in Canada from a weird 70 year-old guy selling Adire Audio gear out of his basement! He asked me if I'd seen his puppy...

Yes. He said it was the only way to get a Brahma. At least he was gentle.
