I'm probably getting on your nerves with all the posts. But I want to do this right the first time. I'm looking for an enclosure for two Eclipse SW9122s. I'm going for SPL. I've been told 1 cubic foot sealed box is best. Is this true? I know a lot of you guys own subs like mine, and though I'd ask for some input. I've been told that sealed is hard on subs, and is 1 cubic foot enough? Thanks guys.

sealed isnt hard on subs, overpowering and user abuse are hard on them. if you are going for SPL then go ported.

lol, sealed is definitely not an option when looking for SPL. A ported enclosure works well in SPL. Whether you use aero ports, round ports, or Slot ports is your choice. Generally, slot ports and aero ports do best in SPL type setups. I can't tell you for sure the size of the enclosure you'll need as I have not experimented with any eclipse subs.

What's a good frequency to tune them at? I've been playing with 32Hz. Is that a good place? I'd experiment, but MDF is almost impossible to find around here...

Question for you, kd7...what amount of real power are you planning to give those subs (what is the amp(s)) and at what final ohm load?  (My guess is 1 ohm with those subs...)    And is the alt a HO?  I ask these because although you said you're going for SPL it could be the case that you really mean just LOUD.  If you have enough power, 1000 to 1500 watts, and a powerplant under the hood that will produce the amperage, I would highly suggest building the small sealed enclosure that Eclipse recommends for these subs.  You'll have your system up and running weeks (or months) before you would if you learn everything you have to learn to build a proper vented box and will have better sound quality, too.

It's much easier to go through the stages with box-building experience from sealed to vented...and much safer for those expensive subwoofers.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

I'm going to be running a 200amp alternator, red top battery, 20 farad cap, then an Eclipse DA7232 4Kw amp.

I live in Montpelier Idaho, very rural aread, I have to dive 72 miles one way to get MDF.

In Montpelier there have to be hardware stores, and probebly a lumber yard or building supply store.  I know there is at least an Ace hardware there, or over in Ovid.  If they don't have MDF in stock they can certainly order it for you.  No need to drive to Pocatello (where I lived for three years, by the way!)

Dude... why'd you ask me first? posted_image I told you the vented box is the way to go... I might be a little offended. NOT! Anyway, the sealed box is NOT the way to go with this woofer if you want output. You HAVE to go with the vented enclosure. A sealed box (1 cubic foot - NET!!!) will allow excellent extension, and still give you good output, but it is certainly not the output monster it sounds like you are looking for. Your amp choice is perfect for those woofers, also. Let me plug the numbers into JBL (I already have the woofer in the database) and give you an idea of where to go for output. 32Hz is probably a good place to start fro tuning it, but I'll plug in some different tuning numbers for you as well.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Thanks man. I can't believe someone knows where I live!!! I didn't even think of Jensen's... They'll have the best price. Poky would be much cheaper than True Value though. But I'm sure Jensen's is probably pretty good on pricing.

I have 33" wide, 15" high, and 35" deep to work with here. I was thinking 3-4 cubic feet. Thanks for all the help guys!

Also, I want it to sound decent across the normal subwoofer frequencies... I want a little SQ, I'm not in competition... yet.

3 cubic feet, (each) tuned to 32Hz oughta beat the shiite right out of you! JBL speakershop is saying about 6dB hot at 43 to 44 Hz, out of car, and upwards of 12 in the car at the same frequency. Better too much, than not enough, AFAIAC... Easier to EQ it out than add it back in!

It's called a filter...no need to say something that really doesn't need to be said on a forum...have fun with the box building.
