I was talking with the local Eclipse dealer and was telling him how I blew my 7104 the first week I got it installed. ( I did not purchase from these guys because woofersetc had them way cheaper). He was telling me how they are smoking them right and left also and keep sending them back. He then told me Eclipse is aware and has put out the 7304 series to replace the 7100 series. He says that the 7300 series use the older magnet setup, which is stronger, as well as different voice coil setups which i could tell by inspecting one in front of me. So for the Eclipse specialists on here, I'm wondering if this guy is full of BS or did they bring back some of the older technology after having all the issues with the newer lineup. I am far from impressed especially after he brought me into his car with 2-L7 Kicker solobarics that would kick mine's ass any day of the week. I was quite jealous to tell you the truth. He told me that I would probably have to go ported to get the air movement I want out of the Eclipses. I have already considered re-designing my box, but was waiting for the Brahma's to come out. I'll probably end up having a shhhty sounding system until I get everything updated. so can anyone confirm this info? thanks

I will try and confirm this for you. There is a Canada wide backlog on the 7100 series right now. Both the 7100 and 7300 series came out at the same time. 2 L7's in a ported box should kick your butt any day of the week as that was what they were designed for. To get loud. Your subs are much more suited to a SQ system, thus a monster slot port box is what you would need to get loud. If getting loud was the goal, then these were the wrong subs to buy from day 1. If SQ is the goal then they are a stellar sub for the application. If you are blowing up subs left right and center, then to me it sounds like they are being tasked to do something they were not designed to do. Check how you are using the system and make sure that you allow the subs to cool, meaning DO NOT play them for extended periods of time at full output, this will melt 99% of subs in no time at all.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

Or if you're not interested in this suggestion, perhaps you need to upgrade to something a little beefier - like the Eclipse Ti's! Talk about a "BEATIN' ON IT" woofer! Cool down? What's that? posted_image

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

this is actually the second woofer I have ever burnt up. The dealer is the one that said they were burning them up. In 10 years, and a dozen systems I think thats not bad. I'm no expert like a lot of guys on here that do this for a living, but have a lot of knowledge and experiences over the years. The L7's I listened to were sealed in the spare tire well like my Eclipses, not ported. The guy showing me was just saying for the 7100 series that I should port my box to move more air for my setup. Getting loud was not my goal, it was for a good SQ setup. I did not set my expectations too high for this setup, but the end result is not what I was expecting. I have listened to many Eclipse in sealed designs and loved the sound and output. Mine however are lacking in my opinion and was surprised and disappointed when one burnt. there wasn't even time for me to listen to these at full output. Maybe they were too new to push like I did. After leaving the stereo shop I went home and looked at my new 7104 compared to the 7304 I just looked at. There are differences between them. The voice coils are definately different for one. The rubber surround feels different also. I just wanted to clarify what I've found and what I was told. So if you could find out for me forbidden the true differences that would be great. I plan on this system lasting me through the summer before a little re-design with some new Brahma's.

Haemphyst, the Ti's were not an option as I don't really have enough power to do anything with them. I only have a single Diamond audio D5 1200.1 that I plan on sticking with. If I had more space then I would consider it, but that was my main reason for the setup I went with, to conserve space and be able to use my trunk.

Thanks again for the help.
