My friend's 95 Montero has the factory-installed M579 and it has gone out (no audio out on AM or FM or tape deck), and he replaced it with an identical unit from the junkyd, which won't even "unlock". How can I tell if there is (or isn't)an amplifier elsewhere in the vehicle?

No, there shouldn't be any amp in there.  Just to be sure, check the wires at the harness.  Set your meter to resistance, and test pairs of speakers.  If you get around 4 ohms, you've found the speakers.

geepherder........Thanks for the info. Once I use the meter to "locate" the speakers, I will therefore know that the lack of audio ci due to nothing but the head unit. How did you know there's no amp in the vehicle?
