sounds like you need a high output alternator

It takes power to make power......I would suggest, first getting a new H.O. alt.  When you can "make" the power, then you need to be able to store it, and recover it....

Look for Kinetik power cells, not optima batteries. Kinetik will give you more storage in a smaller package with quicker discharge and recharge!

Did you check the return resistance reading on your ground?

A cap will only make things worse.  Capacitors are useful to help maintain amplifier output but only after you have sufficient power to begin with.  HO Alt is what you need.

No, a cap does not create power, it uses and stores it. If your voltage is being sapped out this much, a cap is only going to compound the issue.

you'll probally need a new battery and a HO alt. Just get a marine battery of decent quality. Optima batteries aren't any better unless you're gonna run a rock crawler or something that may flip over...

Any thoughts on using a marine battery. i had considered this in the past but didn't know if it would work. i know better than to get a regular capacitor, but i was considering one of the batcaps, i can get a 400 farad for around 100 dollars

Dont bother getting the alt. rebuilt, just buy a HO output one, when someone trys to rebuild the alt to higher specs (usually by using differant flywheels) it tends to not result in much higher output, and often times results in premature failure.

what is the "big three" upgrade anyways? i hear it a lot but never really bothered to ask. is it the battery, alternator, and a cap?

The "big three" is upgrading the power and ground cables in your engine compartment.  The next step is HO alt, then upgraded and/or multiple batteries.  Caps are never an option for power problems.
