Hey was up guys im new to this forum and im kina new to car auido's. So if i ask ne ridiculous ?'s bare wit me. Ne wayz i have 2 alpine S types 1242D 12's and an alpine 1507 amp. Well when i tried to hook it up i heard it and it sounds ok but eventually the battery started to die out...so then i decied to buy an xtra battery for the trunk. now im having some trouble findin out if i can buy ne type of battery or do i have to buy a certain type. a friend told me that i needed some kind of gel battery. I went to a pepboys and asked them and i was about to buy a general purpose battery with 405 CCA he said it wasnt a good idea to do that and then siad he is nto sure and to go to a body shop and ask them.. so now im here trying to get ur opinoion so i woiuld gladly appreciate ne info. u have about batteries and ne thing else on brdging an amp (series, parallel, etc?) Thank You..
Well you would definitely want a closed cell battery if you were to do that, a general purpose battery cant just be put inside of a car, the chemicals in the battery release poisonous gas into the air so it is very dangerous to have a regular battery inside of the car. If you were to do this an optima, exide, or kinetic would work well for this application. However adding a second battery will not do much to remedy your problem, your system is putting too much of a drain on your alternator and the strain is falling onto your battery causing it to fail. If you post what kind of car you have Im sure many members of this forum would be more than happy to help you find a high output alternator to suit your needs. If you want to know more about this and try to understand what is causing your problem just do a search on the forums and there will be plenty of similar threads.
hey thnx for the reply...the car is a 98' lumina...have u ever heard of a battery with gel in it or somehting?....so do i need a new alternator?
A second battery is only going to be beneficial to you IF
- you can provide a charge to that battery off of your alternator.
- you want extended play time with the engine off.
If your engine is not running, the alternator will not charge the battery. If the battery is dying on you while the engine is running, a new battery and alternator is in order. Read the grounding sticky at the top of the forum. You need a battery called an Optima yellow top or Exide Orbital.

If your engine is running and your battery is dieing I would be more worried with testing the electrical system to make sure that the alternator is keeping up with the battery. You may need a higher performance alternator. Of course you may need a better battery just the same. A capacitor stores energy for when the sytems nees it the most and will also help reduce the strain on the battery. Check out the alumapro 5 farad model.

If the battery is
dying, and the engine is running, then suggesting he have it tested is a waste of typing, and a waste of his time, should he decide to have it tested. It is obvious the alternator is not keeping up (with the LOAD, not with the battery - batteries don't "pace" the alternator, the alternator provides power for EVERYTHING in the car, the battery does not, nor should it).
Your ONLY solution is a higher output alternator... NOT a cap, as suggested. A cap has never been proven to fix ANY electrical overload issue in ANY car stereo system. Prevent the overload FIRST, by a: removing accessories such as amplifiers, or b: providing more power with a higher output alternator.
